Przewalski's horse is a unique type of real wild horse that has never been tamed by humans. It was described in the 19th century by the Russian naturalist Nikolai Przhevalsky. This species has been preserved as evidence of the ancient era of wild horses in Eurasia.
Przewalski's horses have a stocky body, short mane and reddish coloring with dark legs and a stripe along the back. They live in harsh steppes, feed on grass and can go without water for a long time. The herds are led by a mare, and the stallion protects the group. These animals are careful, hardy and aggressive in defending their territory.
By the middle of the 20th century, the species was on the verge of extinction due to hunting and habitat loss. The last wild specimens were seen in the 1960s in Mongolia. Thanks to breeding programs in zoos and nature reserves, Przewalski's horse has been preserved.
Today, these horses are being returned to the wild in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, China and Russia, which gives hope for the restoration of their population.
