Good morning, students. Today we are going to have an Internet based lesson. We are going to talk about teachers. About their personal and professional qualities, about the methods they use. And during our lesson you will know some very interesting, on my opinion, information about people you know or have seen or heard about. Let’s start.

Tell me please, what personal and professional qualities every teacher should have. You can use your dictionaries and texts we have discussed at the previous lessons.

Now, please, match English and Russian equivalents.

A teacher should be Passionate страстный

Compassionate

Persistent

Results-Oriented стремящийся к результату

Creative творческий

Curious

Optimistic

Flexible

Now, please, match the qualities and their descriptions:

Teachers should be …

Subject Sampler

These are qualities of a good teacher. Usually teachers are devoted to their profession. But some people first choose one profession. And then they realize that they are not in their shoes. So they change their occupation and become famous in that new field they have chosen. Let’s surf the Internet and find out some interesting facts about famous people who used to be teachers.

Here are some words you will need:

click – щелкнуть мышкой

surf [sə:f] – искать информацию, переходя с сайта на сайт

scan – быстро просмотреть текст

key words – ключевые слова

link – ссылка

Please, click on the first link you see in your lists We are starting our Sampler Quest. There are many questions here, but there are few of us, so let’s start with the second and the fourth groups of questions. Before you click on the link (the red underlined phrase) please read the questions carefully. There are more people mentioned in the text. Try to find at least:

1. two writers who used to be teachers

2. two US presidents who used to be teachers

3. two musicians who used to be teachers

4. two actors who used to be teachers

While scanning the text try to find the requested information and fill in the first and the second columns of the table. You’ve got about 10-15 minutes. If you cannot understand the occupation of a person feel free to surf the Internet. Just copy the name, paste it into the search window and push the ENETR button.

4. Please, report your results.

There’s not much information about what kind of teachers some of them were. But some of them really influenced their students. One of these talented people is Robert Frost, who is famous not only because of his poems, but also because of his teaching methods.

6 years ago Vermont Public Radio made a program about him and his influence as an educator. We will listen to a part of this program. But before listening lets look through the following words:

Let’s listen to the program recording. Try to understand what his idea of teaching was.

Well?

Take these texts. Listen to the story again and try to fill in the gaps.

Robert Frost - An Unconventional Teacher

(March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963)

Inspired by his mother's innovative ideas about education, and to augment his meager income as a poet, Robert Frost turned to teaching. For a time he taught at his mother's private school. Later he taught at Pinkerton Academy in Hew Hampshire.

In 1917, he began teaching English at Amherst College in Massachusetts. And as author Natalie Bober observes, his methods were unconventional.

(Bober)"His teaching appeared to be informal. He was always late for class, yet angry if the students did not wait for him. He much preferred sprawling out on a couch (sofa) at home to sitting in a chair in class for "teaching," and this he often did: "I don't teach," he once said. "I don't know how. I talk and I have the boys talk."

The boys were to read some of the minor authors. "The fellows who didn't blow their trumpets so loudly but who nevertheless sounded a beautiful note."

He believed very strongly that the only education worth anything was self-education. He said at Amherst that "some are self-made outside of college; some are self-made in college; but all are self-made if made to any purpose."

"Everyday I feel bound to save my consistency by advising my pupils to leave school. Then if they insist on coming to school it is not my fault: I can teach with a clear conscience."

Let’s see what have you done. Pass your papers to your fellow students clockwise. Let’s check them.

Great! Now please answer my questions about what you’ve heard:

What do you think about his idea of teaching?

Do you like his methods?

What do you think about his idea of self-education?

And now the last question for today: Who of these celebrities would you like to have as your teacher. Why? Why not?

There’s one person left, Alexander Graham Bell. Try to find information about his educator’s experience. Make a short story about it.
