Mamaev Kurgan. The feat of heroes is immortal!

Mamaev Kurgan is a truly sacred place in Russia, which is a hill on the bank of the Volga River, in Volgograd. Its history is connected with the Great Patriotic War. During the Battle of Stalingrad, this hill served as the site of bloody battles with the Nazi invaders.

Mamaev Kurgan is a dominant height overlooking the city of  Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in Southern Russia. Today the hill hosts a modern memorial complex dedicated to people who fell victim to the Battle of Stalingrad. The battle, a hard-fought  Soviet  victory over Axis forces on the Eastern Front of  World War II, turned into one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

Mamaev Kurgan is a symbol of the Victory of the Russian people in the Great Patriotic War. It is the Heart and Soul of Russia

The history of Mamaev Kurgan During the Great Patriotic War, in the period from September 1942 to January 1943 the fate of the entire Battle of Stalingrad was decided on Mamaev Kurgan. This place was called "Height 102.0" in military documents, and it was a strategically important object, and therefore the Fascist troops tried so hard to occupy it.

The battle, a hard-fought  Soviet  victory over Axis forces on the Eastern Front of  World War II, turned into one of the bloodiest battles in human history. The battle for Mamaev Kurgan lasted 135 days, until the Soviet army still failed to divide the enemy's army and force it to capitulate.

Monument in honor of the fallen soldiers It was decided to create a monument here in honor of the fallen soldiers immediately after the Battle of Stalingrad. The construction of the complex "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" was started in 1959. The author of the project was the sculptor E. V. Vuchetich, and the main architect was Ya. B. Belopolsky.

Monument " Memory of Generations» The first acquaintance with the entire memorial begins at the entrance to the complex, where the composition "Memory of Generations“ is located. It symbolizes the continuous flow of people who remember the heroes.

The аvenue of pyramidal poplars Then, if you go up the stairs, you can go to the Avenue of pyramidal poplars. Its length is 223 meters, and its width is 10. The area of the alley consists of granite slabs, its slopes are covered with grass, shrubs and various trees. Pyramidal poplars rise like a line of soldiers.

Square " Stand to the Death» On the square "Stand to the Death" there is a sculpture with the same name. The monument depicts a brave and strong man who blocks the path of the enemy with a powerful torso. The monument is placed in the center of the pool. The pool is filled with water in summer.

Stone ruins reveal pictures of intense battles for every street, every house, every floor.

The walls are like the pages of a book This attraction consists of two large walls. The walls are like the pages of a book, on which all the dramatic and important moments of those long-standing events are captured. Here you can see battle scenes, calls, and real people's faces. The length of each wall is 46 meters, and the height reaches 17.5 meters.

‘The Iron Wind’ All along the wall, the following words are engraved in large letters: "The Iron Wind beat them in the face, and they all went forward, and again the feeling of superstitious fear seized the enemy: were people going to attack, were they mortal?" The silhouettes of the soldiers of Stalingrad, who stopped the enemy here, stand out in the ruins.

Gkjoflm The walls-ruins overlook a large square — the largest square of Mamayev Kurgan-Heroes ' Square.

Heroes ' Square In the center of the square there is a large artificial pond, which symbolizes the triumph of life over death, good over evil. Nearby there are six monumental statues that depict the exploits of soldiers. The last sculptural composition shows how the soldiers deal with the hydra-the symbol of fascism.

"A sailor with a bunch of grenades and a wounded soldier-infantryman" - a sculptural composition tells about the exploits of sailors in the Battle of Stalingrad. ""A wounded soldier and a soldier who picks up the banner from his hands" - the standard-bearer is killed, but the battle banner is picked up by a comrade.

"Soldier supporting a wounded commander" - the composition is dedicated to the heroism of commanders who do not leave the battlefield until their last breath. "Nurse carrying a wounded soldier" — a girl on her shoulders carries a wounded soldier from the battlefield. Her face is full of determination, despite the overwhelming weight of the load.

Military Hall of Fame

Torch of Fire In the center of the hall there is a marble figure in the form of a huge hand with a torch. The space is illuminated by an eternal flame. The names of people who gave their lives in the defense of Stalingrad are listed on the funeral banners along the walls. There is always a guard of honor. The soldiers go to the post in the morning and keep watch until 7-8 pm. The changing of the guard takes place at 55 minutes of every hour.

Родина «Motherland calls» The statue is a common image of the Soviet people, who stood to the death and were ready to resist the enemy.

" Motherland calls" The pride of the complex is the sculpture " Motherland calls!". This is the largest monument in the world depicting a woman. The total height of the sculpture together with the sword is 85 meters. The figure itself is 52 meters tall. The monument "Motherland calls!" is marked in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest. For comparison, the New York Statue of Liberty is only 46 meters high.

Russian Wonder of the World Mamaev Kurgan makes an impression on every visitor. The monument-ensemble is named one of the seven wonders of Russia. Russians chose the most significant places in 2008. The statue is the highest in Russia and in all of Europe and has the status of the wonder of the world of our country. The results of the contest were summed up according to the results of the popular vote.

Pavlov's House "Pavlov's House" is the house of soldiers ' glory. It is located in the center of Volgograd. During the Battle of Stalingrad, this house was defended by a group of Soviet soldiers under the command of Senior Lieutenant I. F. Afanasyev and Senior Sergeant Ya. F. Pavlov. For 58 days, 25 soldiers heroically held off the onslaught and waves of attacks by the Nazis. All the fighters were awarded awards, and Pavlov himself was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Panorama Museum «The Battle of Stalingrad " This attraction is one of the objects included in the museum-reserve "Battle of Stalingrad". Here you can find archival documents, photos and personal items of the participants of the Battle of Stalingrad. The exhibits include weapons, party cards, and even the personal property of the generals.

Ruins of the Grudinin (Gergardt) Mill) The mill building was almost destroyed during the Battle of Stalingrad. During the war, it was an observation post for the defense of the city. It was decided not to restore the building after the war and now it remains a living reminder of the horrors of the war and the feat of Soviet soldiers.
