Direct to Reported Speech 1. Pronouns She said, "I will buy a dress." – Она сказала: «Я куплю платье». She said that she would buy a dress. – Она сказала, что купит платье. 2. Tenses (if the reporting verb belongs to the Past tense) She says that she is watching a movie. a) She says, “I am watching a movie”. b) He said, “I am playing football”. He said that he was playing football.

Reported Questions WH-questions Direct Indirect Where does he live? He asks where he lives. Where do you live? He asked me where I lived. In reported questions, the subject comes before the verb/auxiliary verb. While reporting questions, we have to use an appropriate reporting verb like ask. We introduce reported question-word questions with  ask + question word: Note that the reported question has no auxiliary "do". As with reported statements, we may need to change pronouns and tense as well as time in reported questions.

YES/NO questions We introduce reported YES/NO questions with ask + if: Direct Indirect Do you like coffee? She asks if I like coffee. Are you cold? She asked me if I was cold.
