Всем известно, что Соединенные Штаты - страна культурного разнообразия. Праздники объединяют людей в Соединенных Штатах. Каждый праздник имеет свой смысл и значимость для нации в целом и каждого гражданина в частности. Государственные праздники - это дни, когда у большинства людей официальный выходной. Государственные учреждения закрыты.

Christmas Christmas is celebrated on December 25. People put up Christmas trees, decorate their homes and gardens, send greeting cards, exchange gifts and attend church services. Children are waiting for Santa Claus to come down through the chimney to their house and leave gifts under the Christmas tree or put them in stockings. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the last Thursday of November. In 1621, after a long hungry winter and severe epidemics, the pilgrims gathered their first generous harvest and held a feast, which has since become a national tradition. Today, American families gather together at their parents' homes for a big homemade dinner: roast turkey with cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and potatoes.

Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day comes on the fourth Thursday of November. When the first settlers landed in America, their first year was very hard and 50 of 100 people died. But the Indians taught people how to plant corn and wild vegetables and in autumn they got a large harvest. Thanksgiving Day was their holiday, the day of giving thanks to God. It is a family holiday and Americans try to gather all family at home on this day.

Independence Day The 4th of July, an Independence Day, is the biggest national holiday of the USA. On this day in 1776 a document, known as the Declaration of Independence, was adopted. During this holiday American cities have parades, people shoot off fire-works in parks and fields. people commemorate the Declaration of Independence of 1976 as a formal document that announced a new country’s creation. Traditionally, there are spectacular fireworks on that day.

Halloween Halloween (October 31) is a unique day when people, especially kids, dress up as ghosts and witches. Children are “trick-or-treating”, which means they are asking grown-ups for candies, and they happily treat them. A pumpkin lantern is a famous symbol of Halloween. Halloween is originally a Christian celebration but it has become popular in many countries, although the traditions of Halloween vary among them. For example, in Russia, where I live, trick-or-treating and making jack-o’-lanterns have not become common. Halloween is a relatively popular holiday but it is celebrated mostly in the form of costume parties.

St. Valentine's Day St. Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14. This is not a public holiday, but most of people like it. Men and women call the day as the lover’s day – the time when we present teddy-bears, candies, flowers, cards and other sweet stuff to each other and even make a declaration of love or propos Valentine’s Day cards are the most popular gifts. They can be ready-made or hand-made. Also Valentine’s cards can be pink or red-coloured and some of them can be heart-shaped.
