Viktor Talalikhin – Hero of the Soviet Union Viktor Vasilevich Talalikhin was a Soviet fighter pilot and one of the first Heroes of the Soviet Union during World War II. Born in 1918, he became widely known for his bravery and sacrifice in the early days of the war.

Heroic deed On the night of August 6, 1941, Talalikhin performed one of the first aerial rammings (known as "taran") at night in the history of warfare. While defending Moscow from a German bomber, he ran out of ammunition and decided to ram the enemy aircraft with his own plane. Despite the collision, he parachuted to safety and survived the encounter. His daring act boosted Soviet morale and made him a national hero. Unfortunately, Talalikhin was killed in action a few months later, in October 1941. His courage and heroism remain a symbol of Soviet resistance during the Great Patriotic War.

Interesting facts Hero of the Soviet Union During His Lifetime – Just days after his heroic act, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the highest military honor in the USSR. Young Hero – Talalikhin was only 23 years old at the time of his famous mission. He already had combat experience, including action in the Winter War against Finland (1939–1940). Killed in Combat Shortly After – He died in combat just two months later, in October 1941, during an air battle near Podolsk. Reports say he may have downed one or two German planes before being shot down. Legacy and Commemoration – Talalikhin is remembered as a symbol of courage. Streets, schools, and monuments across Russia and former Soviet republics are named in his honor, including a statue in Moscow.
