The project “The land of souvenirs” Bulygina Alexandra, 5-6 Project manager: Gorshkova O.I.

Introduction I chose this topic because the souvenirs have always been around me in my family and in my friend’s life. This project is about the nature of souvenirs, their variety and uniqueness in dependence of local history and culture, and about the choice of a souvenir among the present-day schoolers.

The purposes be able to tell about souvenirs to a local resident or a foreigner study the diversity of souvenirs and their origin and modern functions figure out what souvenirs would my classmates prefer to buy and to get

Importance This topic is very interesting for me because I like travelling and discovering something new. I guess that souvenirs may express attractiveness of the places one can go to. I suppose that the souvenirs may have a commercial purpose too, may be like a motivator for the people. I am pleased that I have an opportunity to study these ideas and to discuss them with my friends.

Function and variety The word “souvenir” came in English from French and means “a remembrance or memory”. It is a thing which has a purpose to remind about something, for example about visiting a country or a town, a national park or an event.

Function and variety A souvenir can be any object that can be collected or purchased and transported home by the traveller as a memento of a visit: a charm for keys, a postcard, even a handkerchief or an eaten item.

Abroad and homeland My family likes to travel a lot. Here are some souvenirs from different countries: Japan, Bulgaria, Czechia and Russia. We’ve got a lot of charms for keys. This is a charm from Bulgaria. There is a beautiful old house on it. This gift is a present from friend. Neither my parents nor I have ever been to Bulgaria. Nevertheless, we look at this charm and believe that someday we can go there.

Abroad and homeland Some people collect postcards from foreign countries. Look at a wonderful postcard from Japan. This is a handmade thing, called ukiyo-e. It makes me admire Japanese culture and traditions. And here is another one postcard: it is bought in Moscow and represents traditional Russian values. A foreigner can tell his friends in his country about Russia in details.

Abroad and homeland Other people collect handkerchiefs: this is my Japanese ones for men and women. Women’s handkerchief has got nice story about Kaguyahime, men’s handkerchief has got pictures of famous samurais. I am interested in the history generally, and Japanese one in specific, due to such things.

Abroad and homeland Every year our family travels to the Karelia region. So, I’d like to tell about its souvenirs. The most popular and worth buying souvenirs are the local products. So, one can bring a moroshka jam, canned ryapushka and tea from fireweed. And here is my memory about Karelia. It’s made of local marble. I’ve never seen a bear in wild nature, but I do remember the fear of it during walking in the forests of Karelia. The thing is cute and helps me to struggle fears.

Rank of souvenirs in my class There is 21 schoolers in my research: 14 girls and 7 boys. Most of them of them are 11 years old. I figured out that most of them travels in Russia, but there are also 7 pupils who travel both in Russia and abroad.

My classmates like to GIVE as a souvenir such things like food, magnets and charms most of all. It was a multiple choice.

Modern schoolers prefer to GET food (especially sweets), charms for keys and statues.

I’ve studied that most of my friends think that souvenirs are useful to share the feelings of a trip. They don’t consider souvenir as an advertising or a thing which can tell much about people’s lifestyle.
