Religion The city is home to many Christian denominations, with several churches located in the city center and throughout the surrounding area. St. Helena Parish Church, founded in the center of Beaufort in 1712 as an official church, is the oldest church in the city.
Administration Beaufort is classified as a city according to the South Carolina Secretary of State. The city is governed by a five-member city council under the "council-manager" form of government. The acting mayor is Mike McPhee. Other board members include Josh Scallate, Neil Lipsitz and Mitch Mitchell.
