Chapter 1

Online shopping: history, present and future

History of online shopping

Initially, the Internet was used by groups of scientists, then it was used to transmit information in military plans, and later it was the turn of businessmen. And since the 90s, the network has turned from secret to public. The transfer of information was fast, the network became more and more public. The history of the online shopping and its evolution are quite interesting.

The idea of creating the first online store originated with Jeff Bezos in 1994 in the USA. He thought about how much interest in the Internet had increased. The American businessman concluded that it is possible to offer the Internet audience to order goods directly from home, sitting at the monitor screen. Jeff Bezos settled on selling books. The project was successful, so this is how the Amazon appeared. Since trading via the Internet is a remote way of trading, you need to adjust the issue of payment methods. Cooperation with banks was required. Thus, the first electronic payment system was developed. Currently, the goods can be paid for: with electronic money, cash on delivery, through terminals.

The history of the online store in Russia began in 1996. The first online store of printed products "Symbol-Plus" appeared in Moscow. Now this store is called www.books.ru. At first, there was a lack of confidence among buyers, as this type of trading was new. It was difficult to determine when the product was first purchased in such a store. But April 29 is considered the Birthday of e-commerce. Since 1998, Internet projects have been opened in Russia one after another. Initially, this is the Internet banking system "Internet Service Bank", created by Autobank. Then we observe the birth of the first IMTB virtual bank. Next, a solid online store for the sale of books and multimedia products is gaining momentum. A year later, the sale of goods via the Internet has moved far ahead. New scientific achievements and developments have emerged, and this has played a huge role in shaping the market.

In 2004, the turnover of all transactions in the world conducted through online stores was in the region of one million dollars. This figure rose to several tens of millions the following year, and a year later it increased tenfold. And in 2007, the total volume of transactions conducted via the Internet was estimated at several hundred billion dollars. The importance of online stores is growing and improving. With the advent of new technologies and special programs, shopping online has become not only easy, but also practical. There was a significant time saving. The process of turning online stores into a large-scale independent industry can be divided into four stages of evolution: a showcase, a shopping arcade, a trading platform and an automated online store.

Let's talk about who orders and what they choose, and which is more and less popular of the goods. At first, it is clothes and shoes that Russians order over the Internet most often. There are many reasons: a huge selection, reasonable prices and the ability to return a thing if it does not fit. Teenagers are the most frequent buyers of this product. Adults more often buy appliances and household items. Older people now buy online and enjoy it too. There are active shoe buyers who are already over 80 on the sites. Things like equipment for the garden or are also relevant to them.

Food. This option is also related to online shopping. The sites sell products that do not deteriorate for a long time, and this is very important, as well as if sent for a long time, the product may deteriorate, and you can get poisoned. For this, there are grocery stores located near your home. This way of buying products is beneficial to different categories of people. For example, take people with disabilities, they cannot go shopping on their own, therefore it is very profitable for them to order food. Large families, in such families there is no one to leave the children, so the parents order food. Just busy people, businessmen, they simply do not have time for this and they make purchases online

Types of online shops

The most popular online stores are Wildberries, Citilink, Mvideo, Amazon, AliExpress, Eldorado, Ozon, DNS, etc. They are all different in specialization. There are wide specialized shops, where you can buy absolutely everything, like Ozon, AliExpress, Wildberries, they sell clothes, shoes and accessories, food, beauty products. But there are also narrow-specialized shops. You can find electronics and appliances in Citilink or Mvideo, books and stationery on Labirint, and clothes are sold in Lamoda.

Some chain stores like Corporation Centre, Ostin, Sephora, Optima have their websites where you can buy goods cheaper than in offline shops, also these websites offer bigger choice of products.

We have compared two popular stores, one of them, Aliexpress is a foreign store and Wildberries is a Russian store.

Wildberries

AliExpress

Choice

Smaller selection of products.

Large selection of products.

Price

The price of some products is lower, but there are products with inflated prices.

Product prices are much lower than in regular stores.

Delivery and payment

Delivery lasts from 1 to 7 days. Until March 2020, there were different payment options, but now only 100% prepayment

Delivery lasts from one to six months. And 100% prepayment.

Size

The quality depends on the price and the clothes and shoes sizes correspond to the Russian ones

Different quality of goods, but the quality depends on the price. It is important to accurately check for size compliance, the sizes of clothes and shoes cannot match the Russian ones.

Refund

A refund is possible, but it will take some time

No refund is possible. You can resell an unsuitable product, give it as a gift, or throw it away.

SberMarket

Taking into consideration last year we should mention rather new sphere of internet shopping – buying food online, including easy-spoiling products.

SberMarket is an online service for the delivery of products and goods from the shelves of stores, one of the leaders of the Russian eGrocery market. The company cooperates with more than 40 Russian retailers, including the federal retail chains METRO, AUCHAN, Lenta, Yves Rocher and other hypermarket services with the widest geographical coverage, the company operates in 144 cities and 83 regions of the country from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. This service gained popularity during the lockdown, when many people were afraid to go out.

As it claims, fresh products will be quickly delivered to your home. But in fact users of this service meet a lot of problems. Some goods turn out to be more expensive than on site. Also, some products are replaced by another, of worse quality or more expensive. Some users complain that they have to wait for a long time. Also some people find navigation on the site quite difficult.

However, SberMarket is not as bad as you may think. You may choose any store you like or you used to buy at. It really offers a huge choice of goods; you can buy a lot of food without carrying heavy bags. It saves time, it is very useful if you can’t leave house for some reason. So food delivery is a new fast developing sphere of online shopping and it is gaining popularity.

Coronavirus and online shopping

To date, many people have been sick with coronavirus and certain rules have been introduced. For example: wear masks, treat your hands with antiseptic, etc. And also all stores were forbidden to work in offline mode. Because of this, some stores went bankrupt, and some went into online business.

Some shops, both big and small, had to change during these months. Many of them went online. Some made websites, but it’s rather expensive especially if don’t have income. Smaller shop owners found another way. They made groups in social networks (VK, Instagram, Facebook) where they placed their goods. All you need is to find the group of your favourite shop in VK or Instagram look through the catalogue and order what you like. For small shops it was the only way to survive.

The same happened to restaurants. It was a prosperous business. But, due to the lockdown, customers have become many times less or disappeared at all. The capacity is idle, the tables are empty, the waiters have nothing to do. Many restaurateurs have already begun to talk about having to cut staff or send employees on unpaid leave.

But there is a better way out: instead of shrinking the business, you can expand it! To do this, you need to transfer sales to the Internet. People who work from home also want to eat. So, you need to arrange for them to deliver the usual dishes.

Moreover, regular customers have already been subscribed to their favourite shops and cafes for a long time, which means that they will see information about new services and products in the near future.

Thus, the coronavirus has advanced online business.

Pros and cons of online shopping

It is generally agreed today that online shopping has long been a part of our life. But everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Let us consider the most basic, but also important details.

Pros of online shopping:

- First and foremost, saving time is very essential. Standing in huge crowds of people for a long time in a store or making a few clicks of a button, where you order, makes a big difference. You don't have to go anywhere; all the goods are in front of your eyes. It can be viewed, and selected without getting up from a chair. You can even order an online shopping at any time, this is perfect for anyone, because people have different schedules and can be very busy.

- Large selection of goods. All the goods in the world can be found on the Web, and this is not an exaggeration. If something is not on one trading platform, it will certainly be found on another, moreover, online stores usually present a wide range of sizes and colors of various things that can be selected for any age.

- Saving money. Firstly, if someone drives a car, it is also a big expense of gasoline. And secondly you can also notice that such things in online stores are much cheaper than in ordinary ones.

- Choice of delivery method. This is very convenient when it can be received by post office, or it can be delivered to your home by courier. But you can also pick up your goods yourself at the pick-up point nearest to your home.

- Privacy for discreet purchases.

- No sales pressure.

There are also several cons of online shopping:

- Risk of fraud.  If you're shopping online, there's a larger risk of fraud: credit card scams, phishing, hacking, identity theft, counterfeit products, bogus websites, and other scams are common. You have to be very careful with this.

- It is undeniable that negative environmental impact of packaging and gas.

- Returns can be complicated.

- Unfriendly, scammy, or complicated websites.

- You don't know exactly what you're getting. You may receive the wrong size, color, or even the thing will not be the same as in the picture.

- Delivery. This function also has disadvantages. We pay extra money for this and can meet an impolite courier. It is likely, too, that the product may deteriorate or break during delivery.

-  Spending too much online. The internet is a nice place to do everything and find information or do online shopping, but you probably don't have to live there.

Nevertheless, the advantages of online shopping are obvious, it is a very useful and convenient invention. You just need to be attentive and thoughtful when you choosing a site and placing orders. Choose time-tested stores, read and write reviews, and do not waste too much time and money.

So it’s up to everybody to decide whether online shopping is good or not.

Changes in 10 years

Even 10 years ago, we did not know what shopping on social networks was. Not so long ago we could not imagine that you we could buy without getting up from the couch. Nowadays, online shopping acquires new opportunities and functions.

Increasing mobility

Now residents of cities with millions of people already make a significant part of their purchases through mobile devices. According to experts, in 2021, mobile shopping will firmly take a dominant position. Mobile shopping will continue to be a growth point for regional shopping next year-in the flagship cities; it is well ahead of the overall level in the country.

Users are no longer ready to wait long. According to research by Dostavista, 48% of customers will leave the online store if it does not deliver in 1 day. At the same time, 33% will make a purchase elsewhere, and 15% will cancel it. Fast and free delivery has become an important advantage.

Also, the choice of products has increased significantly. In off-line stores, you can find things not of every taste and color. But in online shops you can find everything.

People have become more gullible about online shopping. It used to be a novelty and people were afraid to order there.

We think that in the future, online stores will replace regular stores. People will buy more often online. The range of products will increase; therefore, the choice will become much larger. The size range will increase. Basically, every traditional store will have its own website where people can order products online. There will be more stores there. In connection with the competition, each store will be improved. Most likely, there will be a free add-on, things can be returned for free if the product does not fit.
