René Magritte. «Lovers Kissing»

Plan:

1. Who is the author of the picture and what is depicted?

2. What is depicted in the foreground and background, in the center? What paints does the artist use?

3. What mood does the picture cause?

The painting "Lovers Kissing" belongs to a series of four "Lovers" paintings painted by René Magritte. This series is considered one of the most mysterious and controversial. We assume that the paintings have a very deep meaning. But today we will talk about the first painting in this series.

I want to say a few words about the author. Rene Magritte is a famous Belgian artist of the 20th century, an iconic figure of surrealism. At the same time, the master himself strove for a figurative style that “challenges the real world” through a detailed naturalistic image. His everyday scenes are surrounded by everyday inanimate objects, but reflect the unusual circumstances inherent in the artist’s “magical realism.” The paintings “Lovers”, filled with deep philosophical meaning, are painted in a typical manner for the artist using poster technology. The first of them, also known as “Kissing Lovers,” depicts a rush of passion, which is expressed through the characteristic folds of fabric on the heads of a man and a woman.

In the center of this picture are two people, white sheets are thrown over the heads of the man and woman, they do not see each other’s faces. And despite this, their lips touch in a kiss. When a person begins to experience a feeling of falling in love, his world begins to take on completely different, unlike anything else. Critics and art lovers have a lot of assumptions and versions regarding this painting. One of the most popular versions tells us that a woman with a white veil on her head has her own prototype. At the age of fourteen, a terrifying story happened to Magritte: his mother, wrapping the nightgown she was wearing around her head, jumped into the river. It can be assumed that Rene Magritte embodied the image of his mother and wanted to express his love for her through the painting. But the artist himself denied all his life that this tragedy affected his life and work.

Now let's talk more about the perception of the picture and its visuals. I repeat, in the center of the canvas are the “Lovers” themselves, for me they are literally the embodiment of the phrase: “love is blind” - the characters remain a mystery not only to each other, but also to you and me. They are consumed by passion as much as by illusion. Love itself is so self-sufficient that it does not need vision. People in love do not necessarily need to see each other and the world around them. They are able to feel closeness even through a double layer of thrown fabric. In this way, the artist conveys to us the idea that true feelings do not know any material barriers. The color scheme chosen is cooler, blue, blue and gray shades predominate against the general background. And for me, an even more nagging feeling of hopelessness or even fear is caused by the walls in the background of the main characters.

The mood from this picture is ambiguous and each person perceives it differently, interprets its meaning differently. Personally, this picture makes me feel uneasy, but on the other hand, I really like it. I have a goal to go to the René Magritte exhibition and see his work live.
