The Reed Cat

The reed cat (Felis chaus) is a rare animal found in the coastal areas of rivers and swamps, listed in the Red Book. It has a slender body, long legs and camouflaged fur, which helps it hunt fish and small animals.

Reed cats are found in South and Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Due to habitat loss and hunting, their numbers are declining, especially in Russia, where they live in river deltas and wetlands.

The main threats are habitat destruction and poaching. Habitat protection measures, the creation of nature reserves and educational programs for the population are necessary to preserve the population.

The reed cat is an important element of the ecosystem of reservoirs. Its protection requires joint efforts of society and the State to preserve biodiversity.
