The Queensland wombat (also known as the northern hairy-nosed wombat) is a rare species of marsupial from Australia.
What it looks like:
A short, stocky animal with a short tail.
It has strong paws with large claws for digging burrows.
It has a large head with pointed ears and small eyes.
It has long whiskers on its face, which is why it is sometimes called the "whiskered wombat".
Its fur is soft, grey to brown, with dark circles around its eyes.
It is about the size of a large dog (about 1 meter).
Where it lives and what it does:
It lives in dry places where there is grass and a few trees.
Loves to walk at night, and sometimes basks in the sun during the day.
Lives alone, digs holes in which it hides and sleeps.
What it eats:
Mostly grass, as well as bark and plant roots.
What happens to it:
It is on the verge of extinction, that is, there are almost none left.
People occupy their territories for fields and cities.
Imported animals, such as rabbits and foxes, take away their food and hunt them.
There are only a few hundred wombats left.
How it defends itself:
When danger appears, it quickly hides in a hole and closes the entrance with the back of its body
