Plan:

1. Who is the author of the picture and what is depicted?

2. What is depicted in the foreground and background, in the center? What paints does the artist use?

3. What mood does the picture cause?

Edvard Munch. “Anxiety”.

The presented painting was painted in 1894 by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munk. The painting is currently in the Munch Museum in Oslo. "Anxiety", like "Scream", belongs to the section "Fear of life". The painting was created after the start of work on "Scream". Many elements in these paintings are common — the same bridge, magical and mysterious overflows of water, concentrically expanding lines covering both heaven and earth. The dramatic, restless mood of Edvard Munch's paintings is due to his difficult fate. The shocks that befell this talented man shaped his character, which could not affect the plot outline of future works. When the boy turned five, his mother died, and a year later tuberculosis ended his sister's life. There is evidence that Munch withdrew into himself after that and did not speak for a whole year. This explains why the motives of death, loneliness, anxiety, and horror have become the main ones in the painter's work. In short, the painting depicts a group of people standing in front of the viewer under a bloody red sky. But let's look at it in more detail.

Three characters are represented in the foreground and six more are marked behind their backs with pale, frightened, blurred faces. Unlike "Scream", which depicts one terrified hero, "Anxiety" is a collective despair. The atmosphere of fear and longing is even more stable here and, according to the author, it is contained in the environment. "Anxiety" is the highest point of anxiety and this anxiety will not be replaced by a sigh of relief: the viewer has a feeling that the story is about to be resolved with a dramatic finale. Munch believed that nature never spares people and often threatens our lives. If you look closely at people's faces, you can see their fear, they all froze as if waiting for something. All men have their eyes directed in different directions, as if they are peering, trying to see the danger, only a little girl standing in front is looking directly at us, as if into the soul. Her look at the caretaker causes the same feeling of anxiety. Munch does not use precise quotations, lines, it is unlikely that he closely examined his facial expression in alarm in order to thoroughly convey it on the canvas – this is not required by the author. The power of color, abstract drawing – that's what creates the strongest impression. The woman in the foreground looks very worried, but the man on the left's anxiety seems to have washed away the human features, leaving his eyes wide open. The rest of the characters are presented even more sketchily, but no less accurately in terms of mood. The painting depicts one of the evenings in Oslo, which is imprinted in the artist's memory. The fact is that at that time Munch and two companions were walking along the bridge on Ekeberg Hill in the capital of Norway. It is this bridge that is depicted in the background of the painting. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, an abattoir and a women's psychiatric clinic were located next to this hill, which are depicted in the background. The unreal scarlet color of the sky is not at all typical of the nature of northern Norway. However, in 1883, the Krakatoa volcano erupted, and a column of volcanic ash spread across the planet, distorting sunlight. And it was that evening that the ashes reached Oslo. The author depicted these bright orange-yellow colors of the sky in his painting.

Looking at the painting and delving into its history, we can understand what feelings the author felt when he painted it. The amazing skill of the author helps us to plunge into this atmosphere and feel for ourselves the very anxiety that he was trying to portray. This painting is my favorite because the way the author draws surprises me every time the colors he uses and his drawing style perfectly combine and complement each other. For the sake of this painting, I would go to Oslo to visit that most amazing place.
