Theater history The history of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow begins in 1776. At first, the theater was called the Bolshoi Petrovsky Theater, after the street on which it was located. In 1805, the building burned down, but it was restored and continued its activities. In 1824, a building was built on Theater Square, but in 1853 it was also destroyed by fire. The modern building was opened in 1856 by architect Albert Kavos.
Theater history After the October Revolution of 1917, the Bolshoi Theater became a state theater. During the Soviet period, the theater played an important role in the promotion of Soviet culture. Both classical works and new, Soviet productions were played there. In 2005, the restoration of the theater building began, which lasted six years. The theater reopened in 2011, having acquired an updated look, but retaining its historical architecture and acoustics.
