Welcome to our Scottish party! (Называет по имени другого ведущего)_______, what can you imagine, when you hear the word “Scotland”.

Oh, it’s quite easy.  First of all I imagine the men in tartan kilts (слайд), than sad sound of bagpipes (слайд), gloomy grey castles on rocks, tasteless porridge in the morning and mysterious lochs with monsters.

Do you know about Scottish Clans.

No, I don’t.

The word “clan” means “children”, but it also used to describe a large group of families. The Scottish clans began many years ago in Highlands of northern Scotland.
All members of the clan had the same surname, and all wore the same tartan. Only Highlanders wore kilts (
Nowadays, kilts are part of the national dress of Scotland.
Look at the stage. There are a lot of children there.
Let’s listen to them.

Look at that,
Look at that
We have got a Scottish hat.
There are a lot of presents
In it’s funny Scottish hat.

Fly the kite
Kiss the doll
Hug the teddy bear
Play the flute
Bounce the ball
Catch it in the air.

An English poet, G.G. Byron, who was inspired by wonderful nature of Scotland. George Noel Gordon Byron was among the most famous of the English 'Romantic' poets and one of the brightest persons of the 19 century. Byron was born in London on January 22, 1788, but his childhood was spent in Scotland.

George Gordon Byron was born in London on the 22nd of January in 1788 in an old aristocratic family. His mother came from a rich Scottish family. His father was a poor officer. Scotland became his motherland. His love of this country was reflected in many of his poems. The boy was obedient and very kind. Romantic nature and heroic history of Scotland conquered boy’s imagination forever. At the age of 17 Byron entered Cambridge University.

G. Byron got his education at Cambridge University and there his literary career began. After graduating from the university he went travelling around the world. The journey took ten years. The poet visited Spain, Portugal, Albania, Greece and Turkey.

From this travel he brought the manuscript of an autobiographic poem «Childe Harold's Pilgrimage». This book made him the most famous poet in Great Britain.

«But I have lived, and have not lived in vain…»

But I have lived, and have not lived in vain:

My mind may lose its force, my blood its fire,

And my frame perish even in conquering pain;

But there is that within me which shall tire

Torture and Time, and breathe when I expire;

Something unearthly, which they deem not of,

Like the remember'd tone of a mute lyre,

Shall on their soften'd spirits sink, and move

In hearts all rocky now the late remorse of love.

It should be noted that Byron's passion for poetry began in Russia in 1819, when his works became known to wide sections of Russian society. In the eyes of young writers, Byron was an idol who played with their minds and enchanted their hearts..

A lot of Russian poets were attracted by the fact that Byron truly portrayed very complex spiritual experiences.

Г. My soul is dark…»

My soul is dark - Oh! quickly string

The harp I yet can brook to hear;

And let thy gentle fingers fling

Its melting murmurs o'er mine ear.

If in this heart a hope be dear,

That sound shall charm it forth again:

If in these eyes there lurk a tear,

'Twill flow, and cease to burn my brain.

Томилась долго и безмолвно;

Byron became the greatest poet of the 19th century. He spawned in the 19th century the phenomenon of "Byronism", including Russian poets. The similarity, and often the dispute with Byron's poems, is recognized in the works of many Russian contemporaries of Byron.

Byron wrote about different things. Byron had also a striking ability to draw captivating female images. We shall listen to Byron's poem « She walks in beauty... » which became one of the most popular in the English-speaking countries. An excellent translation of this poem was made by S.Y. Marshak.

She walks in Beauty.

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skies:

And all that’s best of dark and bright

Meet in her aspect and her eyes;

This mellowed to that tender light

Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,

Had half impaired the nameless grace

Which waves in every raven tress,

Or softly lightens o’er her face:

Where thoughts serenely sweet express,

How pure, how dear their dwelling – place

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,

So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,

The smiles that win, the tints that glow,

But tell of days in goodness spent,

A mind at peace with all bellow,

A heart whose love is innocent!

All For Love

O talk not to me of a name great in story;

The days of our youth are the days of our glory;

And the myrtle and ivy of sweet two-and-twenty

Are worth all your laurels, though ever so plenty.

What are garlands and crowns to the brow that is wrinkled?

'Tis but as a dead flower with May-dew besprinkled:

Then away with all such from the head that is hoary -

What care I for the wreaths that can only give glory?

Oh Fame! - if I e'er took delight in thy praises,

'Twas less for the sake of thy high-sounding phrases,

Than to see the bright eyes of the dear one discover

She thought that I was not unworthy to love her.

There chiefly I sought thee, there only I found thee;

Her glance was the best of the rays that surround thee;

When it sparkled o'er aught that was bright in my story,

I knew it was love, and I felt it was glory.

Thank you for being with us, admiring the poetry of Lord George Gordon Byron.
