Kazimir Malevich. “Black Square”
Black Square is a painting by Kazimir Malevich, one of the most famous paintings in the world, painted in 1915 and executed in the Abstract Art genre. Malevich wanted to completely abandon the depiction of reality and invent a new world of forms. “Black Square” was not just the first painting of Suprematism. It represented a new type of art object. Malevich considered it a sign of a new era in art. The meaning of this work comes down to the primacy of the black square over other forms in art as a primary element.
Not everyone appreciated his project. Opinions about the film from the first viewers were divided. Critic Alexander Benois wrote: “This is one of the acts of self-affirmation of that principle which has its name in the abomination of desolation and which boasts that through pride, through arrogance, through the trampling of everything loving and tender, it will lead everyone to destruction.” Philosopher Mikhail Gershenzon held a different point of view. “The history of painting and all these Vrubels in front of such squares are zero!” - he said. Contrary to frequent misconceptions, Malevich knew how to write in an academic style. The artist's portfolio includes landscapes, still lifes and even portraits. He did not come to Suprematism right away and deliberately abandoned academicism, being an antagonist of the old school of art. Such a difficult choice by the artist gives value to his paintings.
I liked the picture for its mystery. The artist considered his “Black Square” the most pointless work, moreover, a formula for pointless art. To create it, it was necessary to cut off all ties with reality, discard all traditions, and achieve “zero forms.” “I destroyed the horizon ring, and left the circle of things.” Malevich returned to his main work throughout his life. After 1915, he repeated his “Black Square” three times. All three versions were made for different exhibitions. The first repetition is associated with the Venice Biennale of 1924, where the artist wanted to show his monumental triptych - “Square, Circle and Cross” (State Russian Museum). The second was “Black Square” in 1929. Malevich completed the last small-sized repetition of the “Black Square” in 1931–1932 (State Hermitage) for display at two exhibitions: “Art of the Age of Imperialism” and “Artists of the RSFSR for 15 Years.”
I was interested in the picture because of its mystery and the ability to talk about it for a long time.
