Reading

British people

1.       British people are great tea-drinkers. They drink a quarter of all the tea grown in the world each year. Tea became popular in Britain in the 17th century. It was very expensive then. Now between 3pm and 5pm Britons love to enjoy a good “cuppa” strong black tea with milk, of course. It is called 5 o´clock Tea. People usually eat some cakes or biscuits with it. Britons drink tea from the morning till late at night before going to bed. They have a cup of tea before meals, after meals, and between meals. The Englishmen always drink tea out of cups, never out of glasses.

2.       Britain is famous for being a nation of pet lovers. More than 50 per cent of British families own a pet. They keep some 7.7 million cats, 6.6 million dogs and 18 million goldfish. People in Britain give nice names to their pets: Rover, Rex, Cindy, Misty (for dogs); Albert, Snowy, Fluffy, Tom (for cats); Polly, Chatterbox (for parrots); Guy, Scamper, Shipley, Shirley (for monkeys). The British often think their animals are like people. When they speak of their pets, they say, "he" or "she", not "it". In Britain animals can have jobs like people. British Rail has cats and pays them for their work. Their job is to catch mice. There are also special hospitals, which help wild animals.

3.       We can say that they have the best manners in the world. They are very polite, they all know how to hold their knife and fork and they are never rude. They hardly ever use "bad" words. British people apologize for everything, and as a foreigner you should do the same. You will hear ‘sorry’ and ‘excuse me’ a lot. The words “Please” and “Thank you” are also important. Say these “magic words” and you will feel like a real Brit. If you don´t use these phrases, the British people will think you are rude.

4.The British are known as the nation of gardeners. Gardening has been popular since the Roman times. Most people have a garden near their house. They spend much leisure time working among their flowers, trees and vegetables. The British take part in numerous flower-shows and vegetable shows with very good prizes. Many people in Britain are proud of their houses and gardens and want them to look nice. Every town has one or more DIY (Do It Yourself) centres or garden centres. These are like supermarkets for homes and gardens.  People all over the world know the saying “The Englishman’s home is his castle”.
