Moscow, the capital of Russia, is one of the largest cities in the world. It stands on the bank of the Moskva River. About ten million people live in the city.

The origin of the word “Moskva” There are several versions on the origin of the word “Moskva” . According to one of them this word derived from the names of Mosokha (Мосоха), who was a forefather of the Slovanic – Russian people, and his wife Kva (Ква) – hence the name “Moskva”.

Moscow was founded in 1147 by Yuri Dolgoruky

The best way to see Moscow is to buy a map and a guide – book; to follow the recommended sightseeing routes; to walk along the streets and look around; to see historical places, buildings and monuments; to visit art galleries and museums; to ask a resident of the city to advise you what places of interest you should see first. Sightseeing of Moscow Let’s make a tour around Moscow and see the sights of the city.

Manege Square If we come out of the Metro at Ochotny Ryad before us will be one of the widest squares we had ever seen – Manege Square with its Exhibition Hall.

Tverskaya Street To the right is an underground crossing leading to Tverskaya Street – the main street of the capital.

The Kremlin To the left is Alexandrovsky Garden stretching along the red-brick walls that encircle the Kremlin. And a red-brick wall of the Kremlin was built in the 15th century.

Red Square Now we cross the street and find ourselves on Red Square .

St. Basil’s Cathedral There are many interesting buildings on Red Square, but the most beautiful is St. Basil’s Cathedral. This cathedral was designed by the Russian architects Postnik and Barma.

Monument to Minin and Pozharsky In front of the cathedral we’ ll see the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who in 1612 liberated Moscow and Russia from the Polish invaders.

The Spasskaya Tower And opposite it - the tall Spasskaya Tower with a large red star on the peak and the famous clock, known as Kuranty.

The State History Museum There is also the red – brick building of the State History Museum.

The Moscow State University And now let’s go to see the new building of the University on the Vorobyevy Hills. It was founded in 1755 by the great Russian scientist Mikhail Vasiljevich Lomonosov.

The Vorobyevy Hills On the way we’ll see the Palace of Congresses, the old building of the University, the Krymsky Bridge and Park of Culture and Rest along the Moscow River bank.

Panorama of Moscow From the Vorobyevy Hills, we’ll look down at the wonderful panorama of Moscow.

The State Tretyakov Gallery It’s interesting to visit the State Tretyakov Gallery, which is the largest museum of Russian art in the world.

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts At the Museum of Fine Arts there are masterpieces by the great European painters: Rubens, Van Gogh, Henry Matisse, Pablo Picasso and others.

The Bolshoy Theatre When tourists come to Moscow they try to see the ballet or to listen to the opera in the Bolshoy Theatre.
