Britain in the 1990s

The 1990s or the Nineties was the tenth and final decade within the 20th Century. It was the decade of the internet. The internet has changed our lives in many ways and the way the world can do business. The World Wide Web (www) was created in 1990. In 1991it became available to the public and over three million computers were connected to the internet. By the end of the 90s there were over 200 million internet users.

Life in the 90s became more technological. Many families in Britain

had telephones, mobile phones, personal computers, TVs, DVDs, washing machines,

dishwashers and digital cameras.

Music bands and artists of this era included Aerosmith, Oasis, Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys,

Britney Spears, Radiohead and Take That to name a few.

Computer games became very popular in the 90s as were trading cards, pogs, tamagotchis,

troll dolls, beanie babies, ninja turtles, care bears and skateboards. Nintendo 64 and the Sony

Playstation were also released in the 90s.

The national lottery was launched in November 1994 and by the end of the fourth month

people had become millionaires.

In November, 1990, John Major was appointed Prime Minister by the Queen.

On 31st August, 1997, Diana Princess of Wales was fatally injured in a car accident. The

United Kingdom and much of the rest of the world were devastated by the news and

plunged into mourning.
