Introduction

Currently, foreign tourists who do not speak Russian come to the town of Solvychegodsk in the Arkhangelsk region and neighboring towns such as Kotlas and Koryazhma. The purposes of their arrival are diverse, but they all use the services of travel agencies in the town of Kotlas, located 17 km from Solvychegodsk, a small town with a population of 1,833 people.

Visiting a new city or a town is always accompanied by searching for and getting information that is related to the history, culture and attractions of the place. In this way, a tourist booklet in a foreign language is the first and main resource representing the city or a town. Moreover, it represents one of the means of attracting tourists and developing the tourism industry of the city, and thus, it contributes to attracting additional revenues to the city budget. Unfortunately, Solvychegodsk does not have a single printed tourist product in a foreign language and cannot be represented on the international tourist market of services. In our opinion, the work to create such a booklet in English would help to solve this problem.

One more reason why I am interested in this topic is that every summer, while visiting my grandmother in the town of Kotlas, my family and I visit Solvychegodsk, “an open-air museum” as they call it, which was included in the Association of the most beautiful villages and towns in Russia in 2020. More than once we have been participants of excursions led by experienced guides, vividly telling about the history of this small town in Russia. But this summer, walking along the picturesque streets of Solvychegodsk by ourselves, we met a group of foreign tourists listening to a tour in English. For a short time we joined this group and felt like foreign tourists who came to one of the most beautiful small towns of the Russian North.

In this regard, the research topic "Project of tourist booklet of the town of Solvychegodsk in English" was chosen. The problem put forward was that the foreign language tourist booklet is the first and the main resource representing the city.

The hypothesis of our research is tourist booklet in English is necessary for the city of Solvychegodsk and will increase the tourist attractiveness of the city.

Object of the study is tourist booklet.

Subject of the study is tourist information about the city in English.

This research work aims to create a project of tourist booklet of the city of Solvychegodsk in English.

The objectives of the research work are:

1) to study the theoretical basis for the creation of tourist booklets in English;

2) to study the peculiarities of the target audience arriving in Solvychegodsk;

3) to study and systematise the interests of tourists coming to foreign cities;

4) to investigate and systematise the expectations of tourist firms regarding the booklet in English;

5) to select, research and systematise information about the sights of Solvychegodsk necessary for the booklet;

6) to create and present the project of a tourist booklet in English of the town of Solvychegodsk.

The working methods are observation, comparison, surveys, selection of material on the subject, learning of literature.

The theoretical significance of the work lies in the study and systematisation of information in the form of creating a tourist booklet about Solvychegodsk in English; and the practical significance lies in the fact that the created project can be used at different levels (travel agencies, town administration, English teachers and students of schools in Solvychegodsk and nearby towns) in order to attract interest to this town.

Part 1. Theory

1.1 The concept of a "tourist booklet"

The work on this topic began with the clarification of the concept of "tourist booklet". Research of various sources led us to the concept of "booklet" as a sheet publication folded into an uncut notebook, produced on a single sheet folded with parallel folds into several pages so that the text can be read without cutting, unfolding like a screen [Electronic resource] URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booklet. Advertising leaflets, short guidebooks, city maps for tourists, etc. are produced in the form of a booklet more often. The concept of "tourist booklet" is not considered separately in the reference literature. We decided to use the definition of "booklet".

At the next stage of work, the study of special literature allowed us to identify the following advantages of tourist booklets in a foreign language:

structured and clear information in English, which makes easier the perception of voluminous information by tourists from other countries;

the demand for this type of tourist information for the target audience, as booklets are able to answer typical questions of tourists;

development of interest in tourist sites of the city;

low cost against the background of high informativeness.

History and sights of the town

Solvychegodsk is one of the smallest towns in the modern Russia. On the ferry, crossing slowly the River Vychegda it would be hardly visible, unless the grandiose stone cathedrals, the witnesses of the once great Stroganoff dynasty. Trade success on both sides of the Ural Mountains and in Europe, exploratory expeditions to Siberia, tremendous possessions in Perm the Great, on the Kama and Chusovoy, control over entire international trade on the White Sea, and even financing of the Russian tsars themselves — these are the pages of the history of Solvychegodsk.

Usolye, Sol Vychegodskaya, Solvychegodsk, in any name of one of the oldest settlements in Russia, one can predict that the main occupation of its inhabitants was salt, its production and sale. A settlement near the Salt Lake appeared in the 14th century, and at the beginning of the 16th century, salt production on the Vychegda River were granted to the Stroganovs. The further history of the city is closely connected with this dynasty, the founder of the Usolsky branch of was Anika Stroganov.

In the XVI — XVII centuries, Salt Vychegodskaya became not only one of the main centers of salt production in the Russian North, but also the center of the Stroganovs business empire. It seems that all, without exception, natural resources of the northern region from the Kola to The Ob River were the asset of their business turnover and were traded in Moscow and abroad. Ivan the Terrible turned to the Stroganovs for the most valuable varieties of furs, Anika had to control the foreign merchants follow the rules of trade on the White Sea, and his sons bought captive foreigners in Moscow to appoint them as their clerks to trade with Europe. The Stroganovs managed the preparation of Yermak’s campaign to Siberia and even made plans to find ways to China.

At the end of the XVII century in Solvychegodsk a special mastery of painting was developed — Usolskaya enamel. Colourful strokes of poppies, tulips and mysterious plants were painted usually on white off background, seem to open their fantastic buds right in front of the viewer. The craftsmanship of the Usolyans had a significant impact on the development of enamel art in other territories, namely the Great Ustyug and Moscow enamel.

Usolskaya enamel developed, in its turn, under the influence of the famous Stroganov icon-painting school, distinguished by its subtle details, richness of ornament, shining with clear colors and landscape panoramas. The best masters of this school were icon painters of Moscow tsarist workshops, performing work for the temples of the Stroganov dynasty.

The Annunciation Cathedral (Appendix I) — one of the oldest stone churches of the Russian North, was built at the end of the XVI century. This is the Stroganovs family church — with workshop frescoes, a luxurious iconostasis and ornate royal gates. Many icons for the church were painted by the icon painters of the Moscow Kremlin. The cathedral houses an exposition of the Solvychegodsky Museum of History and Art , where the works of Stroganov’s icon painting, pictorial embroidery, products from Solvychegodsk silver masters, the rarest examples of miniature bone, stone and wood craving are presented. The family tomb of the Stroganoffs is located near the cathedral.

The second monumental temple of Solvychegodsk is the Vvedensky Cathedral (Appendix II) of the 17th century, the first and brightest species of the «Stroganov Baroque» with lush outdoor decor and tiles. The carved seven-tier iconostasis, amazing and innovative icons for its time, decorative elements from white stone were made by Moscow masters.

In addition to the cathedrals in Solvychegodsk, stone merchant houses of the late 18th — early 19th centuries have been preserved (Appendix III). Joseph Dzhugashvili-Stalin lived in exile in Solvychegodsk as well as Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin’s cousin — for sympathy with the Decembrists. In total, at the beginning of the 20th century, more than four hundred exiles lived in the city. Themed museum exposition tells us about this page of the history. In the twentieth century, a balneological resort was founded in Solvychegodsk. For the procedures, mineral water and silt mud of the Salt Lake are used.

The surroundings of Solvychegodsk were chosen by Alexei Tolstoy and the Zhemchuzhnikov brothers as the homeland for the author of satirical poems and aphorisms Kozma Prutkov — the famous literary mystification of the XIX century. Now in Solvychegodsk the annual festival of talents named after Kozma Prutkov.

Solvychegodsk is a small town with a rich past, a significant page in history, the whole story can not be complete without. Having lost its former significance, it still retains the memory of the majestic Stroganov era and remains one of the most interesting hot spots to visit in the Arkhangelsk region. As Kozma Prutkov used to say: «What is better? Compare the past and the present».

Part 2. Our Survey

2.1 Sociological survey of classmates and their parents

To prove the research hypothesis, a sociological survey of classmates and their parents was conducted. Fifty-six people took part in the survey and answered the question: "Would you like, when travelling to another country, to receive a tourist booklet about the cities you visit, written in your native language?" 96 per cent of respondents answered positively.

2.2 Research on the work of travel agencies

Then we conducted a study of the work of travel agencies in the town of Kotlas ("Kotlas-Tour", "101 Tour", "Family Travel", "Coral Travel"), which shared information about foreign tourists arriving in Solvychegodsk (there are no travel agencies in Solvychegodsk). Having analysed the data, we can conclude that the target audience of this town is tourists from Poland, Germany, USA, England, Finland, France, coming mainly for the purpose of experience exchange at industrial enterprises. Tourists are interested in the history, culture, geography and nature of the Russian North. Travel agencies organise city tours for them with guides working in English. All the specialists we interviewed noted difficulties in conducting such excursions, as they had no opportunity to support their story with visual information in the language. As representatives of travel agencies told us, they have booklets in Russian and translators are working with them. In addition, they all spoke favourably about creating a booklet about Solvychegodsk in English and provided the necessary assistance and information.

2.3 Study of tourist booklets of various cities

The practical part of the work was continued by studying tourist booklets of various cities in English. Having analysed the information contained in these publications, we made the following diagram:

t1734602336aa.png

Based on the comparative analysis, it was found that the most expected information is about town attractions, hotels, entertainment places, restaurants and city map.

Different cities, both big and small, have tourist booklets. Studying the cities, we found that they have tourist booklets in printed form or electronically in English. While the information about Solvychegodsk is presented only in Russian. This only confirms the practical significance of our project.

2.4 Creating a travel booklet project

Since the majority of the interviewed respondents and the research we conducted spoke about the necessity and practical usefulness of creating such a project, we started selecting information for the tourist booklet project. The criteria for selecting information about Solvychegodsk were developed by us on the basis of the literature studied during the work on the tourist booklet and analysing the results of the survey of the target audience.

Based on the obtained data we prepared a project of tourist booklet of the town of Solvychegodsk in English (Appendix IV).

III. Conclusion

During our research I managed to find out what a booklet is and identify its main advantages. Studying literature about the history of the town of Solvychegodsk, its culture and sights allowed me to learn even more about the development of this small but such a unique town in the North of our country. Questionnaire survey and practical part of the work allowed us to make an assumption that a tourist booklet in English is necessary for the town of Solvychegodsk and will increase the tourist attractiveness of the city. This project has an important practical significance and a wide area of application.
