5. the participants’ clothes?

The Highland Games are a unique combination of culture, sport and social entertainment. From May to September, a full programme of Highland games takes place in small towns and villages across Scotland, as well as on the grounds of famous castles. In the lovely Scottish village of Braemar you might even be lucky enough to see the Royal Family, who traditionally attends the games each year.
So what do people do at the Highland Games? Well, they compete, of course. There are heavy athletic disciplines like throwing the hammer and rolling logs, which are mostly for men. Besides sports, there are also cultural events, like bagpipe playing, highland dancing and many other forms of traditional highland celebrations. The Games usually last around four days.
The dancing and musical events are usually very emotional and impressive. Spectators enjoy Scottish melodies performed by violins, flutes, and drums, but best of all is a game of hundreds of bagpipes. The bagpipes are a Scottish musical instrument that consists of a bag and pipes. When the air blown into the bag is forced out through the pipes, it makes a peculiar sound. Playing the bagpipes is one of the most important symbols of the Games.
D At the Highland Games almost everyone wears the traditional highlander clothing. This is the kilt, a thick tartan skirt that Scottish men and boys traditionally wear. Spectators are allowed to wear whatever clothes they want, but for the athletes, dancers, and musicians taken part – wearing a kilt is a must.
