Beware of the fire

No, I don’t think I can join your party, Martha. I’m a bit busy at the moment.’ My cousin Cathy didn’t even stop typing on her computer to reply. It looked like I had asked her for a big favour, though actually, I just reminded her that we were having a small barbeque party and wanted her to come and enjoy it too.

To say it straight, Cathy was a real bookworm, the only difference being that she was usually searching for information in electronic libraries instead of

traditional ones. She had subscribed to the most reputed libraries and was able to get an electronic version of almost any book, document or piece of information.

In fact, I really liked Cathy and was always glad to be around her, which would not be difficult if it wasn’t for her obsession with learning. My family and Cathy’s family lived next door to each other, in almost identical cottages. We shared a green lawn with a few parasols and a barbeque area.

Are you sure you can’t put it off for a while? It’s my dad who’s making the barbecue, and he’s really good at it.’

He’s perfect at it!’ Cathy said, turning around on her chair and giving me her attention at last. ‘But I really can’t be with you now. I need to have my project completed today so that I can submit it to my History teacher tomorrow.’

Is it your homework?’

Not exactly. But our teacher said that everyone who wants high grades should make a project about an ancient civilisation or a notable ancient event. It’s the sort of task you may choose to do or not to do but…’

I know what you chose. After school, you are going to enter the Faculty of History. It’s your professional interest. So, what your project is going to be about?’

It’s about the Library of Alexandria. You probably know that it was Alexander the Great who came up with the idea of the library, and it was he who started the construction.’

It was about a thousand years ago!’

No, it was much earlier. Everything started two thousand three hundred years ago, when the rulers of Alexandria decided to collect all the knowledge of the world under one roof.’

A very ambitious goal. And how did they plan to achieve it?’

They collected books and manuscripts from all over the world. Each book that existed on earth should have had a copy in the Library of Alexandria. At its best time, the Library contained hundreds of thousands of books. The best scientists and scholars were invited to live in Alexandria, at the expense of the Emperor. However, in the 5th century CE2, the Library was destroyed by a fire. There are lots of versions of how it happened and why it happened. I’m comparing the scattered information about it and I understand that that great fire is still a great mystery.’

Cathy suddenly stopped and smelled the air. ‘I say,’ she said, in a different, matter-of-fact voice. ‘Are you sure someone is watching the barbeque? It smells like it’s burning…’ And we both rushed out of the room.

The barbeque parties were held every weekend.
