Rene Magritte. «Lovers»

Plan:

1. Who is the author of the picture and what is depicted?

2. What is depicted in the foreground and background, in the center? What paints does the artist use?

3. What mood does the picture cause?

Rene Magritte's painting "Lovers" is one of the artist's best and most famous works. Rene Magritte is a Belgian artist who became famous for his surrealistic paintings full of mysteries. When the future artist was 13 years old, his mother committed suicide, and this left an imprint on his work. He did not explain the meaning of his paintings, which are still subject to careful research and analysis. His entire work is a continuous series of tricks and illusions, substitutions and riddles, transformations and secret meanings. His painting “Lovers” is considered one of the most mysterious and controversial.

Let's move on to the picture itself. There are two people in the center of the canvas. White sheets are draped over the heads of the man and woman so that they cannot see each other's faces. And yet, their lips touch in a kiss. The painting depicts the moment of rebirth. When a person falls in love, his world begins to take on completely different colors. The moment when people still cannot see where this love will lead them and where they can move on. What awaits them after? Thus, the picture personifies the phrase “love is blind.” The characters are consumed by passion to the same extent as by illusion: what is important to them is not their real partner, but his idealized image. The picture gives me strange feelings. The color scheme, poses of the characters and the walls evoke a nagging feeling of hopelessness or even fear.

We are surrounded by veils. We perceive the world only behind a veil of similarity. At the same time, an object must be hidden in order to be recognized at all,” wrote Rene Magritte himself. In many of his works, the author used rather unusual images, forcing viewers to think about the meaning of his paintings. However, he himself did not see anything unusual. “I don’t express anything! I’m just looking for images, and I compose, invent... only the image matters, an inexplicable and mysterious image, because everything in our life is mysterious.”

I really liked this picture because of the strangeness and unusualness of the description. The artist liked it when they tried to reveal the mystery of the images he depicted with the help of various interpretations. However, he himself did not agree with any of them. Magritte wrote: “My paintings are images that hide nothing...they evoke mystery and, indeed, when a person sees one of my works, this simple question is asked: “What does this mean?” It doesn’t mean anything, because a mystery doesn’t mean anything, it’s unknowable.”
