Victor Vasnetsov's painting "Three Bogatyrs" is one of the artist's best and most famous works.In the painting “Three Bogatyrs” we see Dobrynya Nikitich, Ilya Muromets and Alyosha Popovich (the main characters of Russian epics). In the middle, on a black horse, Ilya Muromets looks into the distance from under his palm, in one hand the hero has a spear and shield, in the other a damask club. Bogatyrs are depicted as brave and courageous men who are ready to defend their homeland from the enemy. Bogatyrs carefully examine their surroundings in order to engage in combat with their opponents in time.

Images of heroes are depicted against the backdrop of nature. This is Rus' with all its beauties: hills of immense size, spruce trees that have just begun to grow, and fresh and dried grass. Vasnetsov shows nature in its various manifestations to show the richness of Russian lands. A description of Vasnetsov’s painting “Bogatyrs” is impossible without considering the shades that the author uses. Russian nature is depicted in green shades: dark green and light green. In addition, yellow and brown shades are used. The sky is overcast, which indicates impending danger.The heroes themselves are depicted using gray and brown colors, which emphasizes their courage and confidence in their victory. The images of horses on which three heroes are located stand out in the picture. Dobrynya Nikitich sits on a white horse, Ilya Muromets on a black horse, and Alyosha Popovich on a bay horse. V. M. Vasnetsov described the emergence of the idea for the painting as follows: I came across a sketch of three heroes. Painted in Polenov's studio. They talked about Repin’s underwater kingdom, and then Vasya showed Chistyakov’s letter. The sage teacher sent advice to distant lands. “Tell him,” he asked me to convey, “that in his picture it is not the color of the water that sets the tone, but the spirit of the impression from the epic should set the tone for the water and everything; water has nothing to do with it. The color and thickness of water can be different, but this epic is the same.” Chistyakov’s words about the epic reminded me of one old thought, he sketched it with a pencil, or perhaps even with charcoal, immediately upon returning from Ryabov: shaggy, mighty horses, a mighty trinity of heroes. And so it appeared before his eyes: hills, space, heroes. A wondrous childhood dream. I drew it in an instant, brought it to Vasya as a gift, and he looked and said sternly, in Chistyakov’s way, it was in him, Chistyakov’s - to hold accountable for all art and take care of every drawing.

The artist depicts the beauty of Russian nature, so we feel joy and warmth when looking at the landscape. Also, looking at the three Russian heroes, I get a feeling of patriotism.
