ПОЯСНИТЕЛЬНАЯ ЗАПИСКА
Методические рекомендации предназначены для использования в качестве методического пособия при проведении практических занятий по учебной дисциплине ОГСЭ-03 Иностранный язык
Практические занятия проводятся после изучения соответствующих разделов и тем учебной дисциплины.
Практические работы проводятся после изучения соответствующих разделов и тем учебной дисциплин. Выполнение обучающимися практических работ позволяет им понять, где и когда изучаемые теоретические положения, и практические умения могут быть использованы в будущей практической деятельности.
Цель:
формирование практических умений, необходимых в последующей профессиональной и учебной деятельности.
Задачи:
обобщить, систематизировать, углубить, закрепить полученные теоретические знания по конкретным темам дисциплин общепрофессионального цикла;
формировать умения, применять полученные знания на практике;
выработать при решении поставленных задач таких профессионально значимых качеств, как самостоятельность, ответственность, точность, творческая инициатива.
В результате изучения программы дисциплины ОГСЭ.03 «Иностранный язык» студент должен освоить общие компетенции:
ОК 1. Понимать сущность и социальную значимость своей будущей профессии, проявлять к ней устойчивый интерес.
ОК 2. Организовывать собственную деятельность, выбирать типовые методы решения профессиональных задач, оценивать их эффективность и качество.
ОК 3. Принимать решения в стандартных и нестандартных ситуациях и нести за них ответственность.
ОК 4. Осуществлять поиск и использование информации, необходимой для эффективного выполнения профессиональных задач, профессионального и личностного развития.
ОК 5. Использовать информационно-коммуникационные технологии в профессиональной деятельности.
ОК 6. Работать в коллективе и команде, эффективно общаться с коллегами, руководством, пострадавшими и находящимися в зонах чрезвычайных ситуаций.
ОК 7. Брать на себя ответственность за работу членов команды (подчиненных), результат выполнения заданий.
ОК 8. Самостоятельно определять задачи профессионального и личностного развития, заниматься самообразованием, осознанно планировать повышение квалификации.
ОК 9. Ориентироваться в условиях частой смены технологий в профессиональной деятельности.
В результате выполнения практических работ обучающийся должен уметь:
общаться (устно и письменно) на иностранном языке на профессиональные и повседневные темы; переводить (со словарем) иностранные тексты профессиональной направленности; самостоятельно совершенствовать устную и письменную речь, пополнять словарный запас;
знать:
лексический (1200-1400 лексических единиц) и грамматический минимум, необходимый для чтения и перевода (со словарем) иностранных текстов
ФОРМЫ КОНТРОЛЯ И КРИТЕРИИ ОЦЕНИВАНИЯ
Предметом оценки освоения дисциплины являются умения, знания, общие компетенции, способность применять их в практической деятельности и повседневной жизни.

We are causing so much damage to our planet that it will soon affect the global economy. This bleak warning is according to a new United Nations report called the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO). The paper says there are many important ecosystems on our planet that are in danger. These “tipping points” in our natural world are where man’s negative impact on nature will start costing national economies. Examples of these are the deaths of coral reefs, the destruction of huge areas of forest, or major pollution of rivers. UN spokesman Ahmed Djoglaf said: "The news is not good. We continue to lose biodiversity at a rate never before seen in history - extinction rates may be up to 1,000 times higher than the historical…rate."
Scientists are worried that governments will not do enough to try to reduce the damage to the tipping points. World leaders will soon meet in Nairobi to discuss measures to tackle global biodiversity loss. They hope they can then create an international framework that will be adopted at a convention on biological diversity in October in Japan. The GBO report outlines how serious the threat is. It says huge numbers of species are facing extinction if we continue to pollute the environment. Over a quarter of corals may soon disappear. This will have a huge impact on marine life and many fish species will also disappear. Countries will be fighting over much smaller stocks of fish. This problem will be made worse with the increasing pollution of the world’s rivers.

Space
The universe is huge. Scientists say it continues to expand. There are plenty of galaxies in the universe. Our solar system is located in the Milky Way galaxy.
Eight planets revolve around the Sun, including our Earth. The moon is a satellite of the earth. Previously nine objects were considered planets. But in 2006 scientists decided that Pluto did not meet the definition of a planet. It is now considered a dwarf planet.
Space exploration is very important for the future of our civilization. The processes in space affect our planet. When people knew nothing about space, they didn't even understand what caused solar eclipses.
There are objects such as comets and asteroids in outer space. They are a potential danger. The collision of a massive object with the Earth can be a real disaster.
People have been dreaming of other planets colonization for a long time. So far, humans managed only going to the moon. But technology is constantly improving. Scientists from different countries conduct research on orbital stations.
No one knows for sure if there are habitable planets like Earth somewhere in the universe. So far, we can only guess.

Science is important to most people living in the modern world for a number of reasons. In particular, science is important to world peace and understanding, to the understanding of technology, and to our understanding of the world.
Science is important to world peace in many ways. On one hand, scientists have helped to develop many of the modern tools of war. On the other hand, they have also helped to keep the peace through research which has improved life for people. Scientists have helped us understand the problem of supplying the world with enough energy, they have begun to develop a number of solutions to the energy problem - for example, using energy from the sun and from the atom. Scientists have also analysed the world’s resources. We can begin to learn to share the resources with the knowledge provided to us by science. Science studies the Universe and how to use its possibilities for the benefit of men.
Science is also important to everyone who is affected by modern technology. Many of the things that make our lives easier and better are the results of advances in technology and, if the present patterns continue, technology will affect us even more in the future than it does now. In some cases, such as technology for taking salt out of ocean water, technology may be essential for our lives on Earth.
The study of science also provides people with an understanding of natural worlds. Scientists are learning to predict earthquakes, are continuing to study many other natural events such as storms. Scientists are also studying various aspects of human biology and the origin and developments of the human race. The study of the natural world may help improve life for many people all over the world.
A basic knowledge of science is essential for everyone. It helps people find their way in the changing world.

Gadget is a one of the greatest discoveries in the world. It
makes our life easier and more comfortable. Gadget usually used for communication, entertaining, and so on. Talking about gadget, I also have some gadgets in my home such as laptop, mp3 player, and mobile phone. But among the gadget that I had, there is only one gadget that I love the most, I often carry it to everywhere, that is my phone. My phone is red, its shape like candy bar, simple, light-weight and small, so it’s easy for me to carry it everywhere. My phone also have a sophisticated features that make this gadget become my favorite gadget. Well, I would like to tell you some sophisticated features on my phone
The first one is the internet feature on my handphone. My phone has a good quality in internet browsing, it’s quite fast. Although the speed is not as fast as android phone, but I’m quite satisfied with that speed. With the internet features on my phone, I can search anything, I can download many things such as pictures, songs, videos, applications, videos, and many more. Beside download, I can upload my photos, I usually upload my photos on social media like Facebook and Twitter, I also can read and reply messages trough E-mail by my phone. And I can play videos on Youtube trough my phone.
Second, another features is media player. The media player on my phone has two menu, they are song player and video player. With music player, I can listen to my favorite song that stored in my memory card and phone device. Most of the songs in my music player are from Korean and Western songs. I usually add some songs too my playlists, so I don’t need to search the songs one by one. I often open my music player when I was in a public transportation using my earphone. Beside that, there is a video player, I can play my favorite video trough my phone.
The last is the camera function in my phone. My camera’s phone is 3.15 megapixels. It can captures images with good quality. I have so many images in my phone. In my phone, there is a menu which facilitate me to edit my images in by change the effect, or adding text or clip-art, cut the photo or add frame and many more. The camera in my phone is also used as video recorder with VGA quality, but the video recording is not too bad. I can record every important moment with the camera and the video recorder.
In other words, I chose my handphone as my favorite gadget because of the features on my phone such as internet features, media player, and the camera that’s very useful. I think that’s all about my favorite gadget. Thank you

Third, the camera. My camera’s phone is 3. 15 megapixels. It can capture images with good quality. I love to photograph and be photographed. I have so many images in my phone.

And besides, there are people who just change places. Probably they have problems at home and that is their way — rather to escape than to solve. Others look for adventures. We are all different and and have different motives for traveling.

Ecological Problems
Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet and the environment.
Since ancient times Nature has served Man, giving him everything he needs: air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink, wood for building and fuel for heating his home. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with the environment and it seemed to them that the resources of Nature had no end or limit.
With the industrial revolution our negative influence on Nature began to increase. Large cities with thousands of polluting plants and factories can be found nowadays all over the world. They pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the fields where our crops are grown. Big cities suffer from smog. Cars with their engines have become the main source of polluting in industrial countries.
Vast forests are cut down everywhere for the needs of industries. As a result many kinds of animals, birds, fish and plants are disappearing nowadays.
The pollution of the air and the world’s oceans and the thinning the ozone layer are the other problems arising from men’s careless attitude to ecology.
Active measures should be taken to save the life on our planet. There is an international organization called Greenpeace which is doing much to preserve the environment.
Protection of the Environment in Russia
There are many big and small rivers, green forests, high mountains, lakes and seas in Russia. There are a lot of industrial enterprises in our country, that’s why we can’t ignore the problem of the protection of our environment. In Russia and former Soviet republics there are some areas where the environment is in poor state. It is the Aral Sea, Lake Baikal and Chernobyl. We have to control atmospheric and water pollution, to study man’s influence on the climate.
The pollution of the environment influences the life of animals, plants and human life. If we don’t use chemicals in a proper way we’ll pollute our environment. Our plants and factories put their waste materials into water and atmosphere and pollute the environment. There are many kinds of transport in our big cities, that ‘s why we must pay attention to the protection of our nature and the health of the people.
Now radiation has become one of the main problems. It is not good for health of people. Many people died from radiation some years ago in Chernobyl. It was a tragedy.
Another problem is earthquakes. We know some terrible earthquakes in the world. Our scientists try to forecast earthquakes, then we can protect ourselves from them.
The people all over the world do everything to protect nature, to make their country richer, to make their life happier. We need to haves laws and decisions on this important subject.

The present environmental problems have become exceptionally urgent. If many years ago people lived in harmony with the environment, today their interference in the Nature has reached such a degree that it becomes dangerous for their lives. And if the same tendencies remain for the next years, our planet will soon become uninhabited. The ecological problems are not the problems of a single isolated country. They are global in character and involve all countries in the world. The ecological problems have much in common. The main problem is pollution. It is not a secret that every year more and more industrial enterprises are built.
And they have a very bad effect on the environment. They pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land that grain and vegetables grow on.
In addition to air pollution people upset the oxygen balance of our planet because people cut down forests and woods. One of the most dangerous things is radiation. There is a greаt number of nuclear power stations. They have many advantages for the industry, but they present a threat for the life.
Nature is a source of our life and destroying it we destroy ourselves. People forget that natural resources are not endless even though they seem unlimited. Nature has enough resources for the present generation. But their amount becomes less with every year. To protect nature is a duty of all people.

I. The main environmental problems are the source of the Man’s activity. They are water pollution, air pollution, land pollution and atmospheric change.
Water pollution, which is caused by plants & factories, by testing nuclear weapons, dumping industrial waste.
ПРИМЕР. Thousands of fish die every year as a result of the illegal dumping of waste.
Air pollution, which is caused both by buses and cars and also by plants and factories.
ПРИМЕР. One of the effects of air pollution is acid rain. It is damaging to water, forests and soil resources. It is blamed for disappearance of fish from many lakes, for the wide-spread death of forests in European mountains.
Land pollution, which is caused by nuclear waste, dumps (свалки), dirty water, fertilizers, pesticides.
ПРИМЕР It is interesting to know that the main source of pollution are children under two years old, because every second a “pampers” is dumped.
Atmospheric change which leads to climatic changes (because of the greenhouse effect), the increasing radiation from the sun (because the ozone layer is thinning).
Chernobyl nuclear power station suffered a fire, which causes radioactive contamination of a lot of regions. As a result many people died, those who had survived suffered terrible deceases till the end of their life.

People must do something! For example, to protect water people make special filters and air purifiers. People must collect waste properly so it does not get into water or land and also recycle. There is a good formula of RRR. It is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The other thing that we should cultivate a sense of duty in our children, in our youth to take care of our nature, our planet.
We can reduce the usage of electricity and drinking water. For example, when you clean your teeth and let the water run, you lose two or three liters of water. Now multiply 3 liters by the number of people in our city and you will see that it is a lot. But we can stop it if we switch off the water. We can reduce the usage of packing and buying things in plastic packs. It is important because it is very difficult to recycle plastic. If we reuse plastic bags, the factories will produce less of them and will harm Nature less.
In short: I can reduce the usage of gas, electricity and water. I can reuse many things (clothes, for example), paper, bottles.

We eat plants, but if the land is polluted, the plants become poisonous. If we eat them, we ruin our health. The same is with water.

Every year different natural disasters happen on our planet:
Earthquake, Tornado, Landslide, Flood, Forest Fire, Avalanche, Hurricane,Volcano, Drought.
An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by the movement in the fault system. The fault is a crack between two giant pieces of the Earth’s crust.
A tornado is a very violent wind in the form of a funnel of air that spins at great speed. It usually happens in the USA.
A landslide is the movement of rock, debris or earth down a slope. They can be triggered by natural causes or by human activity.
A flood is the rising water overflowing onto a flat land. It is usually caused by heavy rain.
A forest fire is an uncontrolled fire that is wiping out large fields and areas of land. It is typically caused by a lightening strike or extremely dry weather.
An avalanche is a falling mass of snow. Avalanches always occur in the mountains.
A hurricane is a very violent wind or storm.
A volcano is a mountain with a hole called a crater in the top. Sometimes lava and gases are released from the crater.
A drought is a long period of dry weather when there is not enough water.
Natural disasters are very dangerous. They can damage the houses, destroy towns, kill animals and people. In all these disasters nature and people need help. Emergency workers are specially trained people who do their job during and after these types of disasters. Emergency workers such as doctors, nurses, firemen, water and gas workers do their job in difficult situations. Sometimes the police and army help too.

People can hardly imagine their lives without modern technologies nowadays. It is almost impossible to go out without a mobile phone or an MP3 player, for example. These devices have become an important part of our life. Moreover, almost every day either a new technology is being invented or an old one is being improved. To stay up-to-date people keep buying newer items. Soon our houses and work places will look like electronic stores. Technology is all around us. First of all, we need it for work.
All modern offices are equipped with computers, scanners, printers, and other useful machines. One of the most important devices today is the wi-fi modem as it provides Internet. Secondly, technologies surround us at home, in cars and everywhere.
There are many people who are against new technologies. In my opinion, technological progress has made our lives more interesting and bright. Thanks to computers and Internet I find more educational resources. Such electronic items as vacuum-cleaner, washing machine, microwave, dish washer, blender and some others have made my mum’s life easier. So I’m sure that new technologies are for good. In conclusion, I’d like to say, that technological progress continues and it moves rather fast. Thus, I think that soon we will live in ‘smart’ houses with robots doing all housework instead of us.

The technical progress goes straight in huge steps. We live in the 21st century, full of different means of communication. Today almost everyone has a mobile phone. We cannot imagine our life without it because it is very important to communicate with your family and friends. At the same time, we can find the opinion that the usage of mobile phones can be harmful and dangerous.
I think that mobile phones are very useful in our everyday life. Firstly, it is very convenient, as people can call each other anywhere. Secondly, each telephone has such devices as a calendar, a camera, the Internet, an alarm clock and others. No matter where we are, there is an opportunity to get connected to the Internet, check our e-mails and find any necessary information. In addition mobile phones can help fill in our free time. For example, we may play games on it. Moreover, you are always available to delay meetings or let somebody know if you are late. Thirdly, many parents buy cell phones for their children just for safety. If a child gets into some trouble, he can call emergency services or his parents. If you need, you can call the police or an ambulance.
At the same time, some people believe that mobile phones are dangerous. Their microwaves can be very harmful and they affect our health greatly. In addition, there is such a phenomenon as a mobile phone addiction, and it’s a real problem in our society. Besides, when a person speaks on the phone in public places, we can listen to other people’s conversations or sometimes phones ring a lot of times. It is so disturbing.
In conclusion, I’d like to say that mobile phones make our life easier but nevertheless, there is a negative effect on our health. That is why people shouldn’t overuse them.
Computers
Lately computers have filled our life. We do not imagine our leisure without this miracle-machine.
They have much better memories and they can store much information. No man alive can do 500,000 sums in one second, but a computer can. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and even play chess, write poetry or compose music. With the help of computers the Internet has entered into our life. It’s a brilliant source of information because the internet is a big encyclopedia. Now people cannot live a day without checking of mail and visiting their favourite sites. The Internet is not only the assistant in daily work, it is also the other world in which there are mail boxes, libraries, photo galleries, games, shops. The internet gives us a chance to communicate with people all over the world. It is interesting to learn about a life in different countries and you can practice English talking to native speakers. Also you can use the internet if you are looking for a job or to find people who share your interests. By means of the Internet people can travel to different cities, visit tourist places.
Certainly, the Internet can be the excellent assistant in information search. But we can’t rely on all the information. Moreover, some sites are unsuitable for children and should be controlled by parents. Besides, the internet can cause addiction. We lose a touch with the real world getting in a full dependence on a computer. But computers shouldn’t replace seeing your friends. And finally, users of the internet get a lot of spam every day which is very annoying.
I think that it is necessary to understand, what is really important on the Internet and what is not. And then the Internet will be not the terrible enemy, but the indispensable assistant.

It is common knowledge that television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us.
On the one hand, we can say that TV is our eyes because TV helps us to know more about the world, about the other counties, about the events that happened in the world. It gives us an opportunity to "travel" all over the world, to "meet" different people and learn about their customs and traditions. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds. It helps us to relax after a hard day's work and escape from reality. There's always a great variety of programs on TV: news and sports programs, talk shows, games, concerts and theatre performances...
On the other hand, television is a terrible waste of time. It makes us lazier. We stay at home instead of going out. We read less. We think less. We even talk less. Before we admitted the one-eyed monster into our homes, we never found it difficult to occupy our spare time. For instance, we used to have hobbies, we used to go outside for our amusements to theatres, cinemas, restaurants and sporting events. We read books and listened to music. All that belongs to the past. Television encourages passive enjoyment. Little by little, it cuts us off from the real world. Besides, very often the programmes are bad. There is also too much ads. Violence on TV is another problem that worries people. As George Mikes once said, TV teaches us "how to kill, to rob, to shoot and to poison." But the same can be said about computer games and many films and books.

Where Better To Live: In A City Or A Village?
Living in a city and in a country.
First of all I would like to say that living in a city and in a country has both advantages and disadvantages.
To my mind, life in the city is much easier than in the country, because we have developed transport system, shopping malls and so on. You see it is easier to find work and there are a lot of interesting things to do and to see. For example you can eat in restaurants, visit theatres and spend your free time at famous nightclubs. Life is more convenient in a city: services are always better here. Besides in the city people have more chances to be successful and to be famous.
But for every plus there is a minus. For example you have a job, but if it is not well-paid you can’t enjoy this city life as it is expensive. A lot of people move to big cities to find a good job or to enter the University, but if you don’t have your own flat it is not so cheap to rent it and it looks like a problem. The next disadvantages are noise and traffic jams. I think that citizens become very nervous and stressful because of these problems. What is more, sometimes it is very difficult to find open space and green grass, especially at weekend when parks are overcrowded!
If you prefer peace and fresh air it is better to live in the country. I am of opinion that living in the village is good for retired people. They like gardening and nature.
As for me I wouldn’t like to live in the country because I feel bored there. It is enough for me to visit a country at week-ends when I go to my grandparents. (17 предложений)

As a consequence the sky is blue in thevillage, the water is clean and limpid, fruit and vegetables are ecologically clean. It influences people`s health in a friendly way, to say nothing of quietness. When you are in the village you can hear only birds singing and leaves rustling and see only green and blue. There are no car`s horns or loud music from the clubs and people can enjoy the nature.

The life in the country
Live in a country
The main reason for living in the countryside is a quiet and comfortable life, provided by the pastoral view. Hardly anyone could resist the clean atmosphere, friendly neighbors, proximity to nature and a soft pace of life. Those who enjoyed the first morning cock-crow, the chirping of birds in the bushes, and the breathtaking view of the rising sun were delighted at the mere mention of idyllic life. Relaxed suburban residents are able to maintain a more positive attitude and achieve greater success.
But this life has its drawbacks.
First of all, if you have a private house, you should understand that trouble with leaking roof, electricity, heating system, water supply and so on is now your responsibility and you should take good care of your property to avoid possible problems. Moreover, it may be difficult to find a job in the village. And if you want to work in the city and live in the village, you should think over all possible transport problems. It may take you several hours to get to your workplace or you may face traffic congestion. It is also important to check what facilities are there in the village. If the family has small children, it is important to have a good kindergarten and a school nearby. If you love sports, you'll want to have a swimming-pool or a gym near your house.

Secondly, there is a large variety of factories, companies and so on. It means that you have a choice where to work. It is also more likely to get a good, well-paid job in a city. Besides, different cafes, cinemas, theaters, clubs are close to you home if you live in a big town. I think that it is important for young people because we have a lot of energy and in is boring to stay at home.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about the hotel where I was supposed to stay from 18th May till 25th May. I believe the description of this place was totally inaccurate.
To start with, the room was not commodious. I barely had any space for my belongings. Also, the distance to the city centre was 3 times farther than you mentioned.
Secondly, there was an awful view to the old wrecked house instead of the “stunning view” you promised. Also, there were not any of mentioned dishes at breakfast. Every day I had to eat cereals, but in the advertisement I saw the pictures of delicious dishes with sausages and meat.
Thirdly, I had no soap, shampoo or even towels in the bathroom. The receptionist told me the clean lady had just forgotten to put these things. Moreover, in two days there was no hot water. It was quite irritating. I wanted to spend my holiday with pleasure, not with lack of proper breakfast, water and personal hygiene items. After three days I did not want to stay any longer and returned home.
As you can imagine, I am extremely upset. It would be great to get a partial refund to an apology for the annoyance and discomfort. Your early reply will be appreciated.

Теоретический материал
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on two large islands called the British Isles. The larger island is Great Britain, which consists of three parts: England, Scotland and Wales. The smaller island is Ireland and there are about five thousand small islands.
The country’s shores are washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Irish Sea. The English channel separate Great Britain from the continent.
The total area of the U.K. is 244.00 square kilometers with a population of 56 million. It is one of the most populated countries in the world. The average density of population is very high: about 220 people per square kilometer. The greater part of the population is urban. About 80 percent of people live in numerous towns and cities. More then seven million people live in London area. Very often the inhabitants of The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland are called English.
The surface of the British Isles varies very mach. There are many mountains in Scotland, Wales and northwest of England but they are not very high. Ben Nevis in Scotland is the highest mountain. The northern part of Scotland is mountainous and is called the Highlands. Scotland is also famous for its beautiful lakes, which are called Lochs.
The mountains in G.B. are not very high. There are many rivers in G.B., but they are not very long. The Themes is the deepest, the longest and the most important river in England.
The climate of G.B. is mild. It is not very cold in winter and hot in summer. The average temperature in January is about 5C above zero. February is the coldest month in the year. The summers are cool and rainy. July is the warmest month. There is much rain and flog in autumn and winter. October is the rainiest month in the year.
The Union Jack
This is the popular name given to the flag of Great Britain. Actually it is called the Union Flag and it is a mixture of several flags.
It all began in 1606 when Scotland was joined to England and Wales. The Scottish flag, St Andrew's Cross, blue with a white cross from corner to corner, was joined to the English Flag, St George's Cross, white with a red cross. The flag of St George can still be seen on churches in England.
Later, in 1801, when Ireland was joined to the Union, as it was called, the Irish Flag of St Patrick's Cross was added, white with a red cross from corner to corner.
In this way the English people got the Union Flag, which is red, white and blue. King James the Third (1566—1622) ordered that the Union Flag should be flown on the main mast of all British ships, except on ships of war. Here the flag was flown at the front of the ships, on what was called the bowsprit. The end of the bowsprit was called the Jack Star and so we get the name of Union Jack. A “jack”, by the way, is an old word for the sailor. The Union Jack is also on the flags of Australia and New Zealand.
The British Parliament
The British Parliament is the oldest in the world. It originated in the 12th century as Witenagemot, the body of wise councellers whom the King needed to consult pursuing his policy. The British Parliament consists of the House of Lords and the House of Commons and the Queen as its head. The House of Commons plays the major role in law-making. It consists of Members of Parliament (called MPs for short). Each of them represents an area in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. MPs are elected either at a general election or at a by-election following the death or retirement. Parliamentary elections are held every 5 years and it is the Prime Minister who decides on the exact day of the election. The minimum voting age is 18. And the voting is taken by secret ballot. The election campaign lasts about 3 weeks, The British parliamentary system depends on political parties. The party which wins the majority of seats forms the government and its leader usually becomes Prime Minister. The Prime Minister chooses about 20 MPs from his party to become the cabinet of ministers. Each minister is responsible for a particular area in the government. The second largest party becomes the official opposition with its own leader and "shadow cabinet". The leader of the opposition is a recognized post in the House of Commons. The parliament and the monarch have different roles in the government and they only meet together on symbolic occasions, such as coronation of a new monarch or the opening of the parliament. In reality, the House of Commons is the one of three which has true power. The House of Commons is made up of six hundred and fifty elected members, it is presided over by the speaker, a member acceptable to the whole house. MPs sit on two sides of the hall, one side for the governing party and the other for the opposition. The first 2 rows of seats are occupied by the leading members of both parties (called "front benches") the back benches belong to the rank-and-life MPs. Each session of the House of
Commons lasts for 160-175 days. Parliament has intervals during his work. MPs are paid for their parliamentary work and have to attend the sittings. As mention above, the House of Commons plays the major role in law making. The procedure is the following: a proposed law ("a bill") has to go through three stages in order to become an act of parliament, these are called "readings". The first reading is a formality and is simply the publication of the proposal. The second reading involves debate on the principles of the bill; it is examination by parliamentary committee. And the third reading is a report stage, when the work of the committee is reported on to the house. This is usually the most important stage in the process. When the bill passes through the House of Commons, it is sent to the House of Lords for discussion, when the Lords agree it, the bill is taken to the Queen for royal assent, when the Queen sings the bill, it becomes act of the Parliament and the Law of the Land. The House of Lords has more than 1000 members, although only about 250 take an active part in the work in the house. Members of this Upper House are not elected, they sit there because of their rank, the chairman of the House of Lords is the Lord Chancellor. And he sits on a special seat, called "Woolsack" The members of the House of Lords debate the bill after it has been passed by the House of Commons. Some changes may be recommended and the agreement between the two houses is reached by negotiations.
London
London dominates the life of Britain. And it is the greatest and nicest town in the world. Also, the nature of this city is very picturesque. There are a lot of sites and places of interest here. Many parks and theatres, museums and halls, which are always ready to surprise tourists and English with it’s beauty and charm. There are about 40 theatres, several concert halls, many museums including the British Museum, and the best art galleries.
Speaking about parks we can always see many people here listening to others or just heaving their rest. Hide Park with its Speaker's Corner is also in London. Among other parks are Kensington Gardens, St. James Park. In the West End is Buckingham Palace, which is the Queen's Residence, and the Palace of Westminster the seat of Parliament. The best-known streets here are Whitehall with important Government offices, Downing Street, the London residence of Prime Minister and the place where cabinet meets, Fleet Street where most newspapers have their offices, Harley Street where the highest paid doctors live, and some others. There are many statues and monuments there. I think that the majority is devoted to the famous and outstanding people.
London Is situated upon both banks of the River Thames and it is one of the largest cities in the world. Speaking about the West end of London we mean it’s center where famous parks and tropical places are situated. In Westminster Abbey begins and comes to an end royal destiny: in its walls the British monarchs are crowned, here they find their eternal rest. Besides Westminster Abbey is well known for the "poet’s Conner". So… many others memorial boards are established. But the present tombs are far from being all mentioned to the poets.
Well it is safe to say that it is the most famous building in England. It is a fine Gothic building, which stands opposite the Houses of Parliament. It is the work of many hands and different ages and the oldest part of the building dates from the 8th century.

Scotland
Scotland is smaller than England but larger than Wales. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. Scotland is the second part of the UK. Its land is 78,000 sq. km. The population of Scotland is 5,3 mln. people. The largest cities are Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Dundee. People who live in Scotland are called the Scottish or Scots. They speak Scots and English. The biggest rivers are the Clyde and Spey. There are a lot of beautiful lakes in Scotland. But the most famous of them are Loch Lomond and Loch Ness. The lake "Loch Ness" is famous all over the world because of its monster. The greatest mountains are Ben Nevis and Grampian Hills. The national emblem of Scotland is a thistle. The national flag is a blue field with white diagonal crossed stripes. It's Saint Andrew's Cross. In the north west Scotland is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, but in the north east it is washed by the North Sea.
Wales
Wales is the smallest country in the UK. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. Its land is 20,800 sq. km. Its population is about 2,8 mln people. The largest cities are Swansea and New Port. The biggest river is Usk and the biggest lake is Wirnwel. One of the biggest mountains is Snowdon. The national symbol is a yellow daffo dil. The national flag is white and green with a red dragon on it.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is the fourth country in the UK. Its land is about 14,000 sq. km. The population is about 1,5 mln. people. The capital of the Northern Ireland is Belfast. The largest cities are Ulster and Dublin. The biggest rivers are the Shannon and Bun. Northern Ireland is a land of lakes and rivers. The biggest lakes are Lock Neagh and Loch Ney. People who live in Ireland are the Irish. They speak Irish and English. The national flag of Ireland represents a diagonal red cross on a white field. It's Saint Patrick's Cross. The national symbol is a green shamrock.
Task 5. Your friend invites you to spend holidays in his welsh castle, but you’re busy and can’t go. Refuse politely and explain your reasons. Then swap the roles.
