Ivan Shishkin. “Morning in the Pine Forest”

In Shishkin's painting «Morning in the pine forest», we see bears in the forest in the early summer morning. The dense thicket had just begun to be illuminated by the first rays of the sun. They have not yet penetrated into the depths of the forest, but only slightly gilded the tops of coniferous trees. The dense forest is slowly waking up from a night's sleep. The morning fog has cleared, but not completely yet. It is visible above the ravine in the form of a transparent blue cloud.

In the foreground of the canvas we see a family of clubfoot: a bear and three cubs. The mother bear took her furry offspring for a morning walk. Two cubs are climbing the trunk of a broken old pine tree. During the storm, the pine tree, along with its roots, was almost completely torn out of the ground. The mighty old tree broke into two pieces. The lower part of it, held by several roots, bent down to the ground. Two little bears are frolicking on it. One, more nimble, has already reached the very top. And the second bear clumsily climbs after his brother. The bear is watching them closely. Perhaps by growling, she shows her displeasure that they were too carried away by the game. But in case of danger, she is always ready to protect her cubs.

The upper broken part of the old pine fell into the ravine under the weight of the crown. A third club-footed kid climbed up on it. He stands on his hind legs and curiously looks around the waking morning forest. Or maybe he saw something in the depths of the forest.

The air in the forest is filled with the smells of pine needles. In the morning it is damp and cool. Despite this, the bear family is comfortable in this forest thicket.

In the background, you can see a forest with tall century-old pines. The tops of the crown are visible at the farthest ones. They are illuminated by the gentle morning sun. Here the artist used the lightest tones of green and brown paint. In general, the forest looks dark and gloomy. And due to fallen trees and dense coniferous branches, it seems impassable at all. Some pine trunks bent under the weight of the crown, others bent down from the strong wind to the ground. In some places, wet moss is visible on the bark and roots. The lower branches of the old trees are bare, the needles have already fallen off them. It gives the impression of remoteness of this remote and forgotten corner of nature. However, the artist spied it somewhere and transferred it to the canvas.

Shishkin's painting "Morning in the Pine Forest" is widely known to many, as its image has been used on chocolate candy wrappers for more than a hundred years. Due to the club-footed inhabitants of the forest, it looks like a scene from a fairy tale. But in combination with nature, which wakes up with the first rays of the sun, it becomes realistic. The artistic canvas is filled with love for all living things, for our extraordinary nature.
