The Hawking paradox
Stephen Hawking is the most famous scientist on the planet. Stephen Hawking was born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death. He has come to be thought of as the greatest mind in physics since Albert Einstein, with similar interests – discovering the deepest workings of the Universe. His popular science book A Brief History of Tome (1988) is a publishing sensation, staying at the top of the best-seller lists longer than any other book in recent history.
Professor Hawking is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, a post once held by Sir Isaak Newton, and studies the basic laws governing the Universe. He has achieved a popular status enjoyed by few scientists, even making even making guest appearances on the Simpsons cartoon show and Star Trek. Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his early twenties, Professor Hawking uses a wheelchair and a speech synthesizer running on a portable computer designed for him by Intel to speak and give lectures.
Dr John Gribbin, the co-author of a biography on Stephen Hawking, said that there was little doubt the scientist’s condition had contributed to his success, “It’s quite clear that he has been able to benefit in a curious way from having no limitation on his thinking, which is what he does; that’s what his work is all about – sitting and thinking.”
And really it’s partly because he can’t do anything else that he has been able to achieve so much in his chosen field. In spite of failing health and increasing problems in communicating with his colleagues, Stephan Hawking still remains extremely busy trying to find scientific proof for his theory of black holes and a mathematical explanation of what happens to information in them. “My goal is simple. It is complete understanding of the Universe: why it is as it is and why it exists at all”, says the scientist.
