б) Описание рисунков – видов Лондона

T: Imagine we are going along the streets of London. Some of you are guides. You show us some places of interest in London.

e.g. Westminster Abbey is a symbol of English tradition at its best. The coronations of nearly all English kings and queens since William the Conqueror have taken place here. Many of them are buried within the Abbey. Beneath the roof of this Gothic building there are also the graves and memorial slabs of statesmen, philosophers, men of letters and other distinguished people. Here you can see memorials to Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Geoffrey Chaucer, Alfred Tennyson, Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy.

I want to tell you about Tower Bridge. Tower Bridge was opened in 1894. It takes its name from the Tower of London. The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and a half minutes. The covered walkway between the two towers is opened to the public and offers a spectacular view of London.
The city’s greatest monument,
St.Paul’s Cathedral was built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675 and 1710 to replace the old Cathedral that was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Christopher Wren is buried there. Among the many memorials to famous men within the Cathedral are the tombs of Wellington, Victor of Waterloo, and Nelson, hero of Trafalgar.

The Houses of Parliament are the places where the British government seats. These are beautiful buildings with 2 towers and a very big clock called Big Ben.

The English people built the Clock Tower in 1858. The clock has 4 faces and a very big loud bell. The man in charge of the building was Sir Benjamin Hall. The man was very tall and the workers called him Big Ben. So they called the clock Big Ben too.

The Tower of London. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. It is a museum now. There are a lot of interesting collections in the Tower of London. The ravens are another famous sight. The legend says that London will be rich while ravens live here.

Trafalgar Square. On the column in the center there is a statue of Admiral Nelson who defeated the French at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. To the left of it you can see the National Gallery. It has a fine collection of European paintings.

Piccadilly Circus. It is difficult to say what the real center of London is, but many people choose Piccadilly Circus. It is called the circus because it is round, not square like many other places. It is the meeting point of 6 streets. It is famous for its lights. It is always crowded, especially in the evenings.

Buckingham Palace is the official residence of Her Majesty the Queen and her family. It isn’t open to the public. The first monarch who took residence there was Queen Victoria. When Her Majesty is in residence the Royal Standards flies over the east of Buckingham Palace.

в) Ситуации.

T: We are at the Buckingham Palace now. Our guide is Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain. She will tell us about the Buckingham Palace. And then you may ask her some questions.

Queen”: This Palace was built in 1703 in the very center of London. Buckingham Palace is like a small town with a police station, two post offices, a hospital, a bar, two sports clubs, a disco, a cinema and a swimming- pool. There are 600 rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. There are 300 clocks there. About 700 people work in the palace. When the Queen gets up in the morning, 7 people look after her.

Вопросы к “королеве”:

How many children do you have?

Who will the future King be?

Do you get up early?

How many dogs do you have? (8)

Where do you spend your week- end? (At Windsor Castle) etc.

4. Работа с диалогами

Now let’s listen to the dialogue. I’m sure that we will know some interesting facts.

Hello Lena.
– Hello, Ivan.
– I’m very glad to see you. Today I want to show you some marvelous places in London.
– Oh, what a good idea!
– Look, we are near the Trafalgar Square.
– What is situated in the center of the square?
– It’s a column of Admiral Nelson. He was a man who served his country best. He was brave and skillful admiral.
– Fantastic! I see the Houses of Parliament. It’s a marvelous sight! Especially the Big Ben.
– Yes, it is the Clock Tower, 320 feet high and is famous for its immense bell, known as “Big Ben”.
– Super! Thank you for your tour. It was the tops!
– Not at all. I’m very glad that you like it. Good-bye.
– Good-bye!

Thank you for your very interesting dialogue. Let’s continue our travelling. As usual we have the guide. Our guide will be Sveta. Please.

г) Cоставление диалогов по теме. Работа в парах.

e.g.

Dialogue 1

Where were you during your holidays?

I went to London.

What impressed you greatly?

When I came to London I thought something was wrong with the traffic. In London and in other towns of England buses and cars go on the left side of street, and not on the right. So, when English people want to cross the first they must look to the right and then to the left.

It’s very interesting. Thank you.

Dialogue 2

Hello, Dima! I am glad to see you.

Hello, Igor! I’m glad to see you too.

Where did you spend your summer holidays?

I went to London in summer.

What interesting things have you discovered?

I’d like to tell you about some English traditions. The English have sentimental love for things and traditions. They never throw away old things. For example, in many houses Of Great Britain they have fireplaces and though their bedrooms are awfully cold, the English people don’t want to have central heating because they don’t want to do any changes.

I have read that the English are a nation of stay-at - homes. Do they prefer to live in small houses built close together with beautiful gardens around them?

Yes, they do. English people keep their traditions with great honour.

Thank you very much. I was very glad to know about it.

д) Аудирование текста о Лондоне (аудиозапись)

Проверка понимания тестом.

e.g.

is the “hands” of London.

On the column in the center there is …

London’s in my heart,
