Look at this woman:

It is Anna Jarvis, founder of the modern version of Mother's Day, fought against the the commercialization of the holiday. Jarvis took great pains to acquire and defend her role as “Mother of Mother's Day,” and to focus the day on children celebrating their mothers. She was an antiwar activists and for her Mother's Day was a way to promote global unity after the horrors of the American Civil War and Europe’s Franco-Prussian War.

    Mothering Sunday in Great Britain

Mothering Sunday in England is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) in honor of Mary, the mother of Christ, and now, all mothers. Mothering Sunday is also called Mid-Lent Sunday. On Mothering Sunday people give flowers and gifts to their mothers and show their love and gratitude towards them.

Mothering Sunday history in the UK goes back to the time of early Christians in England who celebrated a Mothers festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of Virgin Mary. In the old days many girls from poor families in the country worked in rich houses. Once a year, it was usually a Sunday in March, they could visit their mothers. They went home on that day and brought presents for their mothers and for other members of their families. The origin of the holiday in its present form is also connected with that tradition.

Today the festival of Mothering Sunday is the time when children give presents, flowers and cards to their mothers to express their love and gratitude.

The commonly prepared dish of Mothering Sunday is Simnel Cake. It is a rich fruit cake with a layer of almond paste on top and also in the middle. The cake was boiled in water, then baked.

    Mother’s Day in the USA

Mother’s Day in the USA is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It is a day when Americans take some time to thank their mothers.

In 1868 Ann Jarvis created a committee to establish a "Mother's Friendship Day" whose purpose was "to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War". In its present form, Mother's Day was established by Anna Marie Jarvis, following the death of her mother Ann Jarvis on May 9, 1905. The holiday was declared officially by the state of West Virginia in 1910, and the rest of states followed quickly. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress officially declared Mother’s Day as the second Sunday in May.

Traditionally, all the members of a family celebrate this holiday together. Traditional gifts for Mother’s Day are flowers, candy, jewellery, or doing a special “chore” for Mom. The symbol of the holiday is a carnation. Carnations have come to represent Mother's Day, since the founder, Anna Jarvis, delivered 500 of them at its first celebration in 1908. She chose the carnation because it was the favorite flower of her mother. Later on there appeared a custom of wearing a red carnation if your mother was living, or a white one if she was dead.

    Mother’s Day in Russia

In Russia Mother’s Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in November. The holiday was celebrated for the first time in the Soviet Union in 1988 in Baku. The idea of the holiday belongs to Elmira Guseynova, a school teacher. She decided to arrange a celebration in honour of mothers for the pupils at her school. The initiative was soon taken up by other schools of the Soviet Union.

Officially Mother’s Day was established in Russia in 1998 by the President’s decree. The aim of the new holiday, as it was declared, was to strengthen family values and show the important role the mother plays in the life of any person.

Today Mother’s Day is celebrated mostly in schools, kindergartens and other child institutions. Mothers are invited to the celebration which includes a concert and often a tea-drinking.
