Arkhip Kuindzhi. "Dnipro in the morning"

The painting "Dnipro in the morning" was the last painting exhibited by Arkhip Kuindzhi to the public before he completely refused to participate in exhibition. The painting depicts amazing summer landscape.

In the 1880s, Arkhip Kuindzhi suddenly disappeared from the public, locking himself in his workshop. The painter, who suddenly began to be hotly criticized for excessive decorativeness and exposition tricks (there were those who claimed that the master artificially highlights his canvases and therefore such an amazing radiance emanates from them), decided to leave on the crest of his fame. Kuindzhi hid from everyone for 20 years! However, before he tightly imprisoned himself in the studio, the artist exhibited his favorite works, among which the painting "Evening on the Dnieper" found its place. The exhibition was repeated (the first took place in 1879, and the second in 1882). As if to edify all the "talkers" who accused Kuindzhi of being too bright in color, the master decided to do this work completely differently – only calm muted tones. However, the picture is in no way inferior in terms of the impact on the viewer of its bright "Birch Grove" or, for example, "Rainbow".

The painting "Dnipro in the morning" is painted in modest, pastel colors. In the foreground, you can see a large field with beautiful flowers and a large protruding bush of burdock. Through the entire canvas, the artist stretched out an image of a curved river. The ribbon of the river-extending deep into the painting is conveyed in white, milky colors. The shores are depicted using grayish-green and brown colors. The main emotional force of the painting is the transmission of the boundless steppe expanse. The surface of the river is rendered in soft, milky white tones. On the river, you can see a small boat shrouded in fog; from this angle, it is difficult to understand whether it is really a boat or just a spot. From the first seconds, the sky attracts attention – the features of the Impressionist style are clearly visible here. The environment filled with light and air is conveyed by confident strokes of blue, yellow, pink and white colors. On the most voluminous part of the canvas - the sky, there is neither moon nor sun, only a lone bird flies across this large sky in an unknown direction The colors of the sky are warm, but still dim, as if the sun is about to appear behind the cl The classical composition has found a new color solution, and this created the right mood – ringing silence, a calm morning rising over the Dnieper, which replaced the night haze. The amazing Kuindzhi had a unique ability to see what others just pass by. His paintings do not even need any catchy element, just the most ordinary landscape is enough and, through the talented brush of the painter, it acquires a completely different meaning, striking in its beauty and spirituality. The sky merges with the background, where the shores disappear into the fog.

The writer and artist Leonid Volynsky wrote in his article about Kuindzhi's work: “And it was not in stunning effects that Kuindzhi's main strength was. In his farewell painting "Dnepr in the morning" (the last one shown at the exhibition during his lifetime), there is neither the moon nor the crimson setting sun — nothing but the shore overgrown with burnt grass, wildflowers and thistles and the riverine distances shrouded in a misty haze. Much easier! And yet, stopping in front of this picture, you feel a special joy — it happens when you find yourself in the early morning on a high bank above the river, over vast expanses filled with soft light, and you stand in happy silence.” I, as well as Leonid, feel joy at the sight of my native lands and special pride in the country that Kuindzhi captured so beautifully on his canvas.
