Twelve Flowers of the Year
The snowdrop The snowdrop is the flower for January. It is as white as snow , and grows when snow still lies in the forests. The little plant is a native flower of Europe.
February's flower is the primrose. Primroses can be of different colours: white ,yellow, red, pink, rose, purple and orange. The flowers look like stars. The primrose is one of the earliest spring flowers. They are common in Europe, Asia and North America.
The flower of the month of March is the daffodil. It appears very early in spring too. The flowers are usually yellow. It has been a garden favourite for centuries. The plant has long leaves, bright yellow petals and a sweet pleasant smell. It has been a favourite flower in many gardens. In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a young man who could love nobody else but himself. So gods got angry with him and turned him into a flower.
April's flowers are daisies. You can see them everywhere in the fields, gardens and even roadsides.
The flower for May is the hawthorn. It grows on a small tree and its blossoms are pink, white or red.
June's flower is the honeysuckle.
July's flowers are water lilies. You can often see them on the waters of quite lakes and ponds. Some water lilies are deep yellow in colour and some are pink, white, blue or even purple. Frogs use them as platform or chairs. The best known water lily is Victoria Regia. The leaves of this plant grow over a meter and a half in diameter. Its flowers open in the evening.
The flower for August is the poppy. Poppies have bright red, orange, purple or yellow flowers. They look like cups. They often grow wild in the mountains and in fields.
The morning glory, September's flower is a climbing plant with blue or purple flowers. Their green leaves look like small green hearts. The blossoms are like bells. The morning glory has a sweet smell and can grow wild.
October's flower is the hop. People use it to make beer. It is a climbing plant which often decorates country houses.
The flower for November is the chrysanthemum. It is one of the oldest known flowers. It has been grown in Japan for nearly two thousand years and is the national flower of that island country. Trevellers brought it to Europe in the 17th century. This lovely flower can be white, yellow , red, pink and purple. Chrysanthemums are welcome flowers because they grow and open when there are no many other flowers around. They appear from August to December.
December's plant is the holly. Its flowers have produced red berries for the Christmas season . The holly has prickly green leaves. It is evergreen.
Rose is probably everyone’s favourite. They please us with their beauty from June to September and in England, whose emblem they are, you can sometimes see roses opening in November or even December. They are called “The Queen of the Flowers”. The most common colours are red, pink, white and yellow. If you want to say that a job or a situation includes some unpleasant things you often say “it is not all roses”.
The other plant symbols of the British Isles: the thistle is the symbol of Scotland, the yellow daffodil and leek are emblems of Wales and the shamrock is the emblem of Ireland.
