1.  What kind of communication problems can one face in real life?

2.  What are different opinions about social networks?

3.  Why do some people call social networking sites “time eaters”?

4.  What are the hidden dangers?

5.  What kind of new communication opportunities are provided by social networks?

6.  What are the new prospects in education?

7.  What is a fact about worrying time statistics?

A. The popularity of social networking sites such as Vkontakte, Facebook, MySpace, and Classmates has risen more than four times from 2005 to 2009. Many users say these sites are good for our society, but others are sure that there are more dangers in them than benefits. Your attitude to such websites depends on your age, job, interests and way of life.

B. Social networks promote communication with friends and family, they give people necessary and useful computer skills and teach them to express their ideas in a clear way. Another thing is that the sites let people create new relationships and reconnect with old friends. In every way, more communication, even online, makes connections stronger.

C. Social networking sites make people spend more time online and less time communicating face-to-face. The sites have many time-wasting activities. You stay online longer than you planned and do nothing serious or important. Experts say that teenagers spend about nine hours every week on social networking sites.

D. Psychologists say that social networking sites can have serious disadvantages. It is hard for children to have real conversations and make friends. They become selfish personalities and lose interest in real life. Parents spend less time with their children and all members of the family spend less time with each other because they are using the Internet instead of communicating in person.

E. Internet users spend most of their time on social networks and blogs. Users in the USA spend about five and a half hours every month on their favourite site. And the number is growing. Russians spend 6.6 hours monthly on social networking sites. It is more than people in any other country. For example, in Europe it is 3.7 hours a month.

F. New research shows that social networking sites can be used in schools. Teachers should find ways to use them in class. It would help students to learn how to get information from Internet resources and share it with classmates. Students would also be able to express themselves creatively and present themselves better.

Mary Seacole

The name of a British nurse, Florence Nightingale, is well-known all over the world. She is famous for her selfless work during the Crimean War in the middle of the 19th century. However, the name of another nurse, Mary Seacole, who was called ‘the black Florence Nightingale’, is unfairly forgotten.

Mary was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish officer, and her mother was a free born black Jamaican woman. Mary’s mother kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Though Mary’s mother had no formal education, she was a great expert in herbal remedies. She used herbs to cure sick and wounded soldiers. Mary learnt a lot from her.

In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole, an English officer. The couple travelled a lot. During their trips to the Bahamas, Haiti, and Cuba, Mary discovered some new effective remedies the local people used for cholera and fever. After her husband’s death in 1844, Mary gained further nursing experience during a cholera epidemic in Panama. After returning to Jamaica, she cared for yellow fever victims. Though Mary had never had any formal qualifications, her fame as a medical practitioner grew. She learned everything through practice and soon even carried out operations on people with knife and gunshot wounds.

In 1853 the Crimean War started. Mary offered her services as a volunteer nurse but her application was rejected due to prejudice against women, especially black women. So Mary decided to go to the Crimea on her own and at her own expense.

Mary started up a business called the British Hotel, that others referred to as “Mrs Seacole’s Hut”. It was only a few miles from the battlefront. “Mrs Seacole’s Hut” operated as a general store, a restaurant and a hotel. Here she sold food and medicines and ran a canteen for the soldiers. She often provided free medicines to soldiers who were not able to pay.

Mary regularly went out to the front line to help the wounded soldiers, often putting her own life in danger. She treated wounded soldiers from both sides and often did it while the battle was still going on.

When the war was finished, Mary came back to London as a famous person. But she was completely bankrupt. The British newspapers started a public campaign to raise money for her. The mass media’s initiative was supported by the Royal family, British officers and soldiers. Mary was rescued from poverty.

In 1857 Mary Seacole wrote her autobiography called ‘The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands’. The book was the first travel memoirs ever published by a black woman. It became a bestseller and the income allowed Mary Seacole to live the rest of her life in comfort in London, until her death in 1881.

Sadly, Mary Seacole was completely forgotten after her death. However, in recent years there has been a renewed interest in her life and her achievements.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However, he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

Subject: Dear friend

Dear Ben,

Thank you for your letter, I liked it a lot: so inspiring and full of joy! I’m glad you enjoyed visiting Australia, seeing all those cute animals. I like koalas very much! It’s so great!

My last summer I spent in Moscow. It’s the capital of our country. It’s one of the largest and most beautiful cities on the planet. My family and I

visited lots of places of interest during that trip. I saw the famous Kremlin on Red Square, the ancient cathedrals, wonderful museums and theatres of the city. The most I liked is the Bolshoi Theater. The performance was unbelievable!

One day I'd like to visit the capital of your country. I want to see the magnificent palaces of the Kingdom.

Looking forward to your answer.

Best wishes,

Emily

2. A telephone survey

Electronic assistant: What are you planning to do after finishing school: to find a job, to go to a vacational college or to go to a university?

Student: My future plans are going to a college, but my parents want me to study at a university.

Electronic assistant: What professions, in your opinion, will be the most popular in the future?

Student: In my opinion, the most popular jobs will be the IT-jobs. However, some professions, like doctors, psychologists and teachers are very important and will be popular in the future, too.

Electronic assistant: How much time on average do you spend online a day?

Student: I focus on going online for two to three hours a day, but I check my social media every now and then throughout the whole day.

Electronic assistant: What do you use the Internet for?

Student: It's chatting with my friends most of the time. I like keeping in touch with those dear to me all the time. Also, I watch movies and listen to music online.

Electronic assistant: There are many online courses available for free. What online course would you like to take?

Student: It would have to be something related to history. The knowledge to gain is infinite and the subject is not that hard to learn, which makes it perfect for studying online.

Electronic assistant: What in your opinion are the advantages of online courses.

Student: The most notable one is the lack of necessity to go anywhere to study. It's also worth mentioning that some people feel more at ease with a computer than a textbook or get enough reading and writing at work, so the online course could be a way of relaxation for them.

3. Russia is a huge country and that is why our cuisine is a rich collection of diverse cooking traditions. Our national food has its peculiarities due to the severe climate in winter and various forests rich in all kinds of berries and mushrooms in summer. Traditional Russian dishes are often made of vegetables, dairy products, poultry, meat, fish and various corps. Some food can be really specific for foreigners, as Russian cuisine is very famous for the variety of meat dishes or soups: pelmenies (dumplings), borscht (red beetroot soup), ukha (fish soup), shchi (cabbage soup). Traditional Russian drinks are hot black tea with honey or home-made jam, kvas (a drink made of rye bread), compote (stewed fruit drink). Even though our cuisine is rich in specific dishes, my family prefers traditional ones. We like shchi, roast meat, baked potatoes and vegetables, cakes, blinis and pies. My mother likes to bake, so there is always something tasty at home.

I believe that Russian people are very hospitable. We are happy to welcome guests with tasty dinners with a lot of food on the table. I am proud of our national food and every time recommend foreign tourist to try unusual dishes.
