British Traditions and Holiday Food

t1587383018aa.jpg

The United Kingdom consists of four main parts. They are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. These countries have their own customs and traditions, habits and holidays. For example, English customs can’t be imagined without famous Christmas treats. On Christmas Day people usually have roast turkey, roasted potatoes and Christmas pudding on their tables.

On Valentine's Day traditional special rolls called scones are popular in all countries of the UK. They are baked in the form of hearts with raisins, dried cranberries or cherries.

British people eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday in February or March. Flour, eggs and milk are needed for pancakes. Then you eat hot pancakes with sugar and lemon or dipping in honey, sour cream or jam.

In some parts of Britain there are pancake races on Shrove Tuesday. People run with a frying pan in one hand. They have to "toss" the pancake, throw it in the air and catch it again in the frying pan.

Housewives prepare homemade sweets made from burnt sugar and apple cider vinegar, and also serve candied fruits and fresh pastries.

Easter is loved by all people because it is a spring holiday and nature is beautiful.

Children help their parents to colour eggs and parents give them chocolate bunnies. Aside from eggs, the best-known English Easter food is probably the hot-cross bun. Dating back to medieval times, the buns were traditionally eaten on Good Friday, but they are now popular all around the Easter season. These sweet treats with fruit and spices are marked with a cross, either slashed into the dough before baking, or drizzled on in icing afterwards.

On Mothering Sunday simnel cakes are served. They are small cakes with raisins and candied fruits. Simnel cakes may be covered with almond paste.

In England Halloween is often known as "the night of beating nuts or the night of eating apples". Families can sit by the fireplace and tell stories while eating apples and nuts.

On Bonfire Night English people prefer potatoes, sausages and chestnuts cooked in the bonfire. Children’s favorite part during Guy Fawkes Night is the tasty food sold in streets. They enjoy baked potatoes, homemade toffee apples, sausage rolls and popcorn, etc.

Some Facts About Bitish Cuisine

t1587383018ab.jpg

The United Kingdom consists of four main parts. They are England, Scotland, Wales and NorthernIreland. These countries have their own customs and traditions, habits and holidays. There are four main nationalities in the UK: the English, the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish. Of course, each of them has its own food traditions.

Let’s take Scotland. January the 25th is the birthday of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet. It is celebrated in many countries of the world. The celebration usually takes the form of supper at which traditional dishes are eaten. The supper is called Burns’ supper. The main course is haggis, Scotland’s national dish, which is served with “tatties and neeps” (mashed potatoes and turnip). It is a dish containing sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal’s stomach for approximately three hours. If haggis is prepared properly it’s a real treat! It is accompanied by the traditional starter, cock-a-leekie (chicken and leek soup) and a traditional Scottish dessert such as sherry trifle or oatcakes.

Lamb is the basis of a popular Irish dish and it is traditional Irish stew prepared with potatoes and onions. Cumin and parsley are added as spices.

Irish people living in the North like potatoes very much. At first they were mainly eaten by the poor, but soon potatoes became popular with all the population. Today it is used to prepare colcannon-mashed potatoes with cabbage and onions, champ-cut potatoes with milk and butter, and boxti-pancakes made from grated potatoes.

As for the national cuisine of Wales it is rich in meat and fish dishes.

Lamb and pork are particularly popular in Wales. Seafood is also widely represented in Welsh cuisine: fish, crabs, and shrimps. Various cheeses are also very famous. They are made with herbs, garlic, pepper, etc. Soups are among the first traditional dishes of Wales. Leek soup is cooked on the basis of meat broth (most often from chicken) with the addition of onions, potatoes and thick cream. It is light but it warms up on cold days.

Cold soup is popular as well. The main ingredients are salmon and leeks. Potatoes, cream, butter, white wine, and spices are added to this traditional Welsh dish.
