Прямая речь (direct speech) — это дословное высказывание человека, переданное с полным сохранением стилистики. При цитировании прямая речь всегда заключается в кавычки. Косвенная речь (reported speech) — пересказ чьей-то реплики своими словами с сохранением общего ее содержания. Обычно эти слова отправляются в придаточное предложение, и кавычки уже не ставятся.
