I.Оргмомент

1.Teacher: Good afternoon, dear friends! Today we’ll have a seminar. We’ll speak about English literature and English writers. First of all answer my questions, please.

-Do you like to read?

-Is reading important?

-Why do you think so?

- What British writers and poets do you know?

-Do you think it is important to know foreign literature?

-Why do you think it is important?

2.Teacher: I agree with you. I think it is very important to study foreign literature, because we should know not only the language but also the traditions and the customs and the literature of other nationalities. And what do you think about reading?

II. 1.Pupil 1: On my birthday I often get presents from my friends. But there is one present I like to get for my birthday, and that is a book. It’s doesn’t matter what kind of books it is. It can be a story, a book of poems or a book of plays, I enjoy them all. I get some of books from the library. The librarian knows a lot about literature. She gives me advice about literature and recommends me what books to take.

2.Teacher: Today at the lesson we have a guest. Olga Ivanovna is our school’s librarian. Olga Ivanovna, what can you tell us about a library?

Librarian: A library is a collection of books. If you have fifty or sixty books at home, this is your library. A library is also a building where there is a large collection of books. There are libraries for grown-ups and libraries for children where people can get books to read. Most libraries have reading- rooms. In a reading-room there are tables at which you can sit read a newspaper, books about travels, books on history and geography, and books on science. There are a lot of novels, books of short stories, newspapers and magazines there.

3.Teacher: Thank you very much. Your information is very useful. Boys and girls! You should make up your own dialogues “At our school library”.

(E.g.1) – Hello!

- Hi! Where are you going?

- I am going to our school library.

- Is your school library large or small?

- The library is small but there are many books there.

- Is there a reading-room?

- Yes, there is. There are tables and chairs there. I can sit and read a newspaper and a magazine there.

- What is our librarian’s name?

- Her name is Olga Ivanovna. She helps me to choose books.

- How often do you go to library?

- Every week.

- Who is your favorite writer?

- My favorite writers are A.Pushkin, N.Neckrasov, D.Defoe. I like poems. Today I want to read one poem of John Richard Moreland “The Birch-trees”.

The night is white,

The moon is high,

The birch-trees lean

Against the sky.

The cruel winds

Have blown away

Each little leaf

Of silver grey………

- It’s very nice poem. I like this poem. But sorry, I must go. Good-bye.

- Good-bye.

(E.g.2)-Hello!

- Hi! Where do you study?

- I study at school number 7.

- Is there a library in your school?

- Yes, there is.

- Do you like to read books?

- Yes, I do.

- How often do you go to the library?

- Every week.

- What kind of books do you like to read?

- I like to read historical and adventure stories. I also prefer to read modern novels.

- Good-bye.

- Good-bye.

4. Teacher: The next task is to prove the following statements “Books are our friends”.

1. Books help us to study.

2. Books help us to discover new things.

3. Books help us to learn more about animals and nature.

4. Books help us to relax.

5. Books help us to solve problems.

6. Books make us clever and better.

7. Books influence to our temper.

8. Books are the best present.

5. Teacher: Great Britain gave the world a lot of talented people. Many famous writes and poets were born in Great Britain. What famous English writes do you know? (Byron, W.Scott, J.Galsworthy, J.Jerome, W.Shakespeare, L.Carroll, D.Defoe, J.Swift, R.Burns…)

Listen to the stories and try to guess who are who.

Pupil 1: I’m the world’s greatest poet and dramatist. I was born on April 23,1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. My mother was a daughter of Robert Arden, a farmer. My father was a glover who had an office at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Little is known about my childhood, I got my education at the Grammar School. I got married in 1582 to Ann Hathaway and had three children.

I lived in Stratford until I was about 21; when I went to London. I became an actor and a member of one of the big acting companies. Soon I began to write plays for this company and a few years became a well-known author.

I wrote 37 plays such as “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “Othello”, “Twelfth Night”, “Richard III”.

I spent the last years of my life in Stratford.

Teacher: Who is he? (He is W.Shakespeare.) Now listen to one of his poems. It’s Sonnet 90.

Then hate me when thou wilt; if ever, now;
Now, while the world is bent my deeds to cross,
Join with the spite of fortune, make me bow,
And do not drop in for an after-loss:
Ah, do not, when my heart hath 'scoped this sorrow,
Come in the rearward of a conquer'd woe;
Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,
To linger out a purposed overthrow.
If thou wilt leave me, do not leave me last,
When other petty griefs have done their spite
But in the onset come; so shall I taste
At first the very worst of fortune's might,

And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,
Compared with loss of thee will not seem so.

Teacher: But now listen to the Russian translation of this sonnet.

Pupil 2: I was a famous and popular Scottish poet. I was born in 1759. I was born in a family of a poor farmer. I was the eldest of seven children, so I had to help my father on the farm. My father was a kind person who loved and understood people. My mother had a beautiful voice and often sang songs and told many folktales to me and sisters.

I remembered mother’s songs and stories all my life. My father wanted that I to be an educated person and sent me to school at the age of 6. I liked to read books. My favorite writer was W.Shakespeare.

At the age of 15 I started to write poems. I wrote about people, about everyday life. The heroes of my mother’s stories became the heroes of my poems.

In 1777 I moved to another town where I organized a society of young people. We discussed moral, social and political problems of that time. In 1784 my father died and I had to work at the farm.

In 1786 I published a book of my poems which soon made me popular.

Teacher: Who is this person? (He is Robert Burns.) Now listen to his poem “My Heart's in the Highlands”.

My heart's in the Highlands

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here

My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,

A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe -

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go.

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,

The birth-place of valour, the country of worth!

Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,

The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high-covered with snow,

Farewell to the straths and green valleys below,

Farewell to the forests and wild hanging woods,

Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods!

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here

My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer,

A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe -

My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go

Teacher: Now you’ll listen to the translation of this poem.

Teacher: Listen to one more story about the famous English writers and poets.

Pupil 3: I am the famous English writer. I was born in Bombay, India, where my father a professor, worked at that time. I spent my early years in India. When I was six years old, my parents sent me to England, where I went to a school.

I came back to India when I was seventeen years old. At twenty-one I published my first book of my poems. A year later I wrote a book of short stories about India.

Between 1887 and 1899, I visited many countries and lived for some years in America where I married an American girl. I also wrote poems.

At the end of my life I lived in a small village in England. I wrote poems “Six honest serving-men”.

Teacher: Who is this person? (He is Rudyard Kipling.)Listen to the poem of this poet “Six honest serving-men”.

I keep six honest serving-men

(They taught me all I knew);

Their names are What and Why and When

And How and Where and Who.

I send them over land and sea,

I send them east and west;

But after they have worked for me,

I give them all a rest.

I let them rest from nine till five,

For I am busy then,

As well as breakfast, lunch, and tea,

For they are hungry men.

But different folk have different views.

I know a person small-

She keeps ten million serving-men,

Who get no rest at all!

She sends’em abroad on her own affairs,

From the second she opens her eyes-

One million Hows, two million Wheres,

And seven million Whys!

Teacher: One of our pupils has prepared the translation of this poem. Listen to him.

Teacher: One more story about one of the most famous persons from Great Britain.

Pupil 4: I was born in England in 1832. When I finished school I became to study Maths. In a few years I began to teach this subject at the university.

I had no family but I love children very much. I often visited my friend Henry Yearg Liddell, who had a large family. There were three little girls in the Liddell family.

I like Alice, who was four years old. I often told her interesting stories which I made up myself. I told Alice the adventures of a little girl in Wonderland. Alice liked the stories very much. When Alice was ten years old she asked me to write down these stories for her and I did so. The name of the little girl in the stories was Alice, too. A friend of the Liddells, who was a writer, read this handwritten book and liked it very much. He said that a lot of children in England must read it, too. I decided to publish the book.

Teacher: Who is this person? (He is L.Carroll.) Listen to two our pupils. They’ve prepared one extract from this book.

Alice in Wonderland.

Alice (A): - Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall

All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

And how exactly liked an egg he is!

Humpty Dumpty (H.D.): - It’s very provoking to be called an egg.

A.: I said you looked like an egg, sir.

And some eggs are very pretty.

H.D.: Now, tell me your name and your business.

A.: My name is Alice but…

H.D.: It’s a very stupid name! What does it mean?

A.: Must a name mean anything?

H.D.: Of course, it must. My name means the shape. With a name like yours you might be almost any shape.

A.: Why do you sit up there all alone?

H.D.: Why, because there’s nobody with me!

A.: Don’t you think you’d be safer down on the ground?

H.D.: If I did fall the King has promised me to…

A.: To send all his horses and all his men…

H.D.: You’ve been listening at door but you couldn’t have known it!

A.: It’s in a book.

H.D.: They may write such things in a book. That’s what you call a history of England.

A: He talks about it just as if it was a game!

H.D.: So here’s a question for you. How old are you?

A: Seven years and six months.

H.D.: Wrong! You never said a word like that! Seven years and six months! An uncomfortable sort of age. Now if you’d asked my advice I’d have said: “Leave off at seven” – but it’s too late now.

A.: Is that all you wanted to tell me?

H.D.: - That’s all. Good-bye!

III.Teacher: Thank you for your information and now I’d like you to do some tasks to check your knowledge. You have lists of paper with written names on your desks. I

Take your books back to the library in time.

Choose an author as you choose a friend.

Don’t lose your books. That means that you lose your friends.

2.Teacher: - So, you have revised the facts from biographies of some famous writers. Now you will have to make up a story about one of them. Your home task: write a short composition about your favorite writer.

- Thank you for your work. You were active and clever today. Do you like our lesson? Well done. Today at the lesson: «5» - ; «4» - ; «3» - . I’ll give you a useful card “Some good advice for you”. Please, study it once again at home and try to follow this advice.

- That’s all we have time for. Let’s say “Good-bye” to each other.

Sometimes you say “Hello!”

Because the bell has gone,

And every day you say

“Good day, good day, good day”.

It’s time to say “Good-bye”,

Good-bye, good-bye, bye.

-Our lesson is over. Good-bye, boys and girls!

Robert Burns (1759-1796) In South West Scotland we meet Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet, who wrote hundreds of songs and poems, mainly on the country life, love and national pride.

My Heart's in the Highlands My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer, A-chasing the wild deer and following the roe - My heart's in the Highlands, wherever I go. Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North, The birth-place of valour, the country of worth! Wherever I wander, wherever I rove, The hills of the Highlands for ever I love. Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) Kipling is best known for his works of fiction, including The Jungle Book (a collection of stories which includes "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi), Kim (a tale of adventure), many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King"; and his poems, including "Mandalay" "Gunga Din" "The White Man's Burden" and "If". He is regarded as a major "innovator in the art of the short story"; his children's books are enduring classics of children's literature.
