WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DEFINITE ARTICLE ?

В английском языке артикль – служебная часть речи, которая используется для выражения категории определенности – неопределенности. Артикль определяет существительное и не имеет собственного значения. В английском языке существует три типа артикля: неопределенный артикль а/an определенный артикль the нулевой, то есть отсутствие артикля.

Артикль the используется в следующих случаях: Если существительное уже упоминалось ранее. Jane has a cat and a dog. The cat is white and the dog is black. 2. Когда собеседникам известно, о каком объекте идет речь, даже если он не упоминался ранее. Lucy takes sandwiches with her to the office. 3. Когда мы уточняем, о чем идет речь, или описываем конкретного человека. The university I attended was very good.

4. При упоминании единственных в своем роде объектов. the Sun, the Moon, the Earth  5.Перед прилагательными в превосходной степени и порядковыми числительными. the tallest tree the second part the most beautiful dress

6. С прилагательными, которые обозначают нацию или определенную группу людей The French are famous for their food. The poor need more help from the government.

7. С названиями географических объектов (рек, морей, океанов, гор, пустынь) the Thames , the Alps , the Black Sea , the Pacific Ocean

8. С названиями английских газет и журналов . the Times , the Guardian , the Daily Telegraph

Существуют устойчивые словосочетания и выражения, которые требуют постановки артикля the: the day after tomorrow  the day before yesterday in the morning (evening, afternoon) on the whole  out of the question  to go to the theatre (cinema) to play the piano  to tell the truth
