You see holidays in different countries, which are the most popular and favourite may be different. It depends on history, traditions and customs in each country. Now we find out what holidays are the most favourite in Russia.

I’ll give you a sheet of paper with a task to fill in the gaps. You can see a diagram which shows us what holiday is the most popular. I’ll give you 2 minutes to do the task.

Let’s read and check up.

Diagram:

January………………………………………….…………….90% New Year

…………………………...………66% Christmas

March…………………………..….63% Women’s day

April…………………….…………….64% Easter

May………………….24% May day

…………………..…….52% Victory day

June………15% Day of Russia

Text:

The most popular holiday in Russia is (1)…………… . The second most popular holiday is (2)…………………. . (3) ……………………is a bit more popular than (4)………………….. . Half of the Russian people choose (5)……………………. . One quarter of Russians celebrate (6) ……………………… . (7) is a new holiday. It is not very popular yet.

Now I ask you to compare the American and Russian holidays. Listen to the information about the holidays in the USA and we find out what holiday is the first choice for Americans. (SB p.78, ex.2 part2)

73% Christmas

11% Halloween

6% Thanksgiving day

5% Independence day

3% Easter

2% St. Valentine’s day

So, the most favourite are New Year and Christmas. Maybe people like these holidays because of magic and miracle and they want to believe in them.

There are a lot of songs connected with New Year and Christmas. But the most popular is “Jingle bells”. Let’s sing it, but you can’t do it at once. First, you should listen to the song and write down the missing words in the text of the song. Take a sheet of paper.

Dashing through the ……………….,

In a one-horse open sleigh,

Over the fields we…………………,

Laughing all the ………………… .

Bells on bob-tails ring,

Making spirits bright,

What fun it is to ride

And sing a sleighing song……………….. .

Chorus:

Jingle bells, jingle……….., jingle all the way!

Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.

Jingle bells, ……….bells, jingle all the way!

Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.

Missing words:

snow, go, way, tonight, bells, jingle.

Now let’s sing the song all together.

In conclusion I’d like to ask you what is your favourite holiday? Why?

When do you celebrate it?

What do you do on this day?

(Дети рассказывают о своих любимых праздниках)

Thank you for your answers. I see you know much about holidays. Your hometask is to write a story about the number one holiday in your family. You were active today and I’ll give you good marks. The lesson is over. See you tomorrow.
