Victory Day.

One of the greatest holidays in this country is the Victory Day. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. We celebrate the end of the Great Patriotic War and remember the people who died for Russia.

The war lasted for four years. Soldiers fought all over the country: from the White Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south. The Brest Fortress was the first to fight the fascists on 22nd June 1941.

There are a lot of monuments to the heroes of this war everywhere in Russia. The best known are Mamayev Hill, Piskarev Cemetry and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where an eternal flame burns.

Every year on 9th May, veterans who fought in the war take part in a parade, they wear their medals. People give them flowers and then they all go to the monuments. The biggest military parade is in Moscow’s Red Square, but in all big cities there are also parades.

There are a lot of people in the streets and squares, at theatres, cinemas and concert halls. They are all celebrating their holiday. Many people go to see their friends or go for walks in the parks. At schools children prepare concerts and invite veterans. At homes people watch the parades and films about those difficult years on TV.

In the evening there is a holiday salute and a minute of silence to remember all those who did not come back from the war.

Many people watch fireworks at night on Victory Day.

Victory Day is a holiday that unites all Russian people.
