Урок на тему «Groundhog’s Day»

Учебно-практическая: активизация и закрепление лексики по теме: “Праздники и обычаи страны изучаемого языка”, развитие навыков устной речи, формирование гибких и вариативных умений говорить, развитие навыков понимания иностранной речи на слух, навыков чтения и письменной речи.

Ход урока:

Teacher: Good afternoon dear guests! I am glad to see you on our holiday. I want to tell and show you about one Europe holiday. We have guests on our holiday – they are citizens from Punxsutawney.

Citizens from Punxsutawney: 

student 1 : Hello, everybody!

student 2: We are glad to see you! We are Northern Groundhogs!

student 3: And we want to tell you about Groundhog’s Day!

student 4:Groundhog’s Day is always celebrated on February 2.

student 5:This is the day people keep an eye out for groundhogs. Why?

student 1: According to ancient legend, if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and does not see his shadow, because the day is cloudy, winter will soon end.

student 2: BUT, if a groundhog does see his shadow, because the weather is bright and clear, the sight of his own shadow will scare him into ducking back into his burrow. That means winter will continue for 6 more weeks.

student 3. There are many old superstitions that have to do with predicting the weather.

student 4. Farmers wanted to plant seed safely without fear of frost.

student 1: Fishermen wanted to avoid dangerous storms at sea.

student 2.:But there were no weathermen back then to help them.

student 3:Forecasting was done using superstitions.

student 4: Many early people believed these ancient sayings

student 1 :Some also believed that animals had magical powers.

student 2.The ancient Egyptians believed that cats could protect their homes.

student 3 The ancient Celts believed that groundhogs could predict the weather.

student 4. In modern times, people used these old superstitions to build a new holiday called Groundhog Day.

student 1: That’s why, on the magical day of February 2nd each year, people say that if a groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, spring is right around the corner.

student 2: The truth is – groundhogs cannot predict the weather. But it’s a very fun holiday.

student 3:And today we are going to celebrate the Groundhog’s Day!

student 4. We are ready to start!

student 2.: His dream is very strange: there are no usual trees and bushes, the grass has a different taste and the water in the lake is not blue.

student 3: The calendar on the wall says: Year 6012. What a surprise! (student (groundhog) идет к зеркалу) . Phil is excited, he comes to the mirror and looks at himself. What does Phil see?
